3GS wont turn on: Questions regarding files and unlock

Think, serial with K is refub. Don't think it matters at this point whether the phone is old (untethered) or new (tethered) since the phone is in a state where you have to restore to 4.2.1. You best option is to restore with a custom 4.2.1 firmware file (one that keeps the current unlockable baseband).

Thanks so the file on post 3 is a custom 4.2.1, Maxburn or even you, if you used this file do u think it will preserve the baseband?

also some questions before i go ahead with it.

Can i restore using that custom file and if its a old bootrom unlock it? can reburfs still have an old bootrom?
also my other option is wait for dev team to release something, if they do can i still unlock and jb if i have restored using the custom file?

That file works fine, I used it on my phone and others there used it too.

It can be jailbroken but we just don't know about the tethered or unlock part it'll we see some numbers.

K the phone is a dud right now so I'll use the custom 4.2.1 to restore and tell her to get a orange sim to activate it. Then I'll be able to get more info. I'll also check the bootrom before restoring, and let you guys know.
Hopefully this reburf still have the old bootrom. if not I'll just wait for dev team release something, while I have the custom 4.2.1 on the phone

So I'm gonna do this tom and just a quick question. In this step
9. Run redsn0w to jailbreak. It will want the factory firmware which you downloaded. Ensure only Install Cydia is checked. Hacktivation is enabled by default. This step was scary because my redsn0w crashed after you click the last submit button. But it worked anyhow."

If you want to keep the your baseband = possible unlock, you should always update with a custom firmware file.

For 3GS, 4.2.1 JB are either untethered (old bootrom) and tethered (new bootrom).

Thus, with a custom 4.2.1 firmware file, you can update to 4.2.1 either untethered or tethered and still unlock.

Give f0recast a shot to see what baseband is, maybe it can see it but it's a longshot.

It doesn't really matter if you update and retain the baseband only to find it wasn't an unlockable baseband anyway, you didn't have a chance to start with.
