I picked up an Apple Universal Dock (This Box Design) for my 3rd Gen iPod, with the touchwheel. On the back of the box and in the manual, it says "You can use this Dock with iPhone or ANY iPod with a Dock Connector." Problem is, the 3rd Gen only charges via Firewire, and when I plug the dock into a mac with Firewire, nothing happens, it doesn't even sync. When I plug it in with USB, it will sync but not charge. Is there some setting that needs to be changed etc., or is the manual incorrect?

IIRC the second version of the Universal Dock (which is what you have since the box mentions the iPhone) doesn't have FireWire support, whereas the original one did.

Does the original one have S-Video, or is that the even newer model?

Edit: The S-video one looks like model number A1153

Yep, the original one has S-video output. I used to have one of those years ago and I just recently bought another one since my iPod collection has grown recently. But it should work through FireWire, I also have a 3rd gen iPod so I should be able to try it out soon.
