A friend recently dropped off his new freely acquired 4,1 for me to upgrade and I've come to the realization that there isn't much I can do with it. The Mac Pro 4,1 - 5,1 firmware update, both the original and patched gives me a 5570 error and I cannot download El Capitan from the App Store for whatever reason. It isn't greyed out, it simply will not allow me to download it.
I don't have installers for anything but Sierra and a (broken?) Mavericks so I'm sorta lost at what to do.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Specs: 8 GB ram, 2.93 quad, 4870

Do you have another Mac you can download El Cap from?

What GPU is installed? Firmware updates absolutely require a GPU with an EFI driver.

Can you get the exact text of the error message you're getting when you attempt the firmware upgrade? Either write it down or take a photo of it or something.

You have to download El Capitan from your purchase history instead of directly from the product page on the Mac App Store.

For the error 5570, I did a quick search and got this thread says something about Apple renaming the firmware file, so you need to download a patch for it.

This is the patch they are referring to

I have tried the patch and used an updated version in that thread without any success. Ahh bummer about El Capitan, I never downloaded it so I cannot access it.

Last year Apple started to offer direct download links to 10.11 and 10.12, even if you didn't have "bought" it before on the Mac App Store.

10.11.6 Mac App Store direct download link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-el-capitan/id1147835434?mt=12

10.12.6 Mac App Store direct download link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos-sierra/id1127487414?mt=12

10.13 Mac App Store direct download link: https://itunes.apple.com/ch/app/macos-high-sierra/id1246284741?mt=12

You can perform the 4,1->5,1 firmware update and avoid the 5570 error by following the instructions in post #15 of the thread below:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/firmware-tool-for-4-1-to-5-1-upgrade.1752143/

I will go ahead and quote the post from that thread for convenience, but the idea wasn't mine and I am not trying to take credit! These instructions did work for me when I patched my own 4,1 a few years ago.

Actually I found the solution on Netkas.org. The site was down for a good portion of today and I wasn't abel to search their archives.

Apparently all you have to do is this:

Download the Mac Pro Firmware update 1.5 (MacProEFIUpdate.dmg) from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321

With the downloaded .dmg on the desktop, double click to mount the image.

Run the Mac Pro 2009-2010 Firmware Tool. It will automatically locate the package and proceed to the next phase of reboot and power switch hold until the little light above the power button begins to flash or you hear a long beep.

There is no need to rename or replace anything. The Firmware Tool grabs the package and proceeds with the process with no 5570 error message.

Hope this helps other Mac Pro 2009 users who are attempting this firmware update.
