I've had this problem before 4.1 on 4.0.1, annoying? Yes.

I just delete Photos & Settings from the multitasking tray and it normally displays your camera roll.

Fix from Apple forums

This is what is posted on Apple forums and seems to fix for some:

"THE FIX
Download 'iPhone Explorer' (Google that one and it's free for Win/Mac).

Plug iPhone in and navigate to the PHOTODATA folder.

Locate these three files:
1. Photos.sqlite
2. PhotosAUX.sqlite
3. com.apple.photos.caches_metadata.plist

Save them to your computer.

Delete them from your iPhone.

Restart your iPhone and let if boot fully.

Open 'Photos' and wait for the iPhone to 'rebuild the library'.

Enjoy your thumbnails once more! "

This resolved the issue, but what exactly are those files? Why was it necessary to save them to the computer before deleting? Do they need to be re-added to the phone?

Thanks.

This happened to me on my 3G after upgrading to 4.0.

Several photos in a row were just black icons, but every new photo I take is fine, and every photo before the "blackout" is fine too. It's just a random chuck of photos that are black.

They're cache files for the database and thumbnails. They somehow got corrupted and removing them forces the OS to rebuild them. You only saved them in case the OS doesn't rebuild them, but since it did you can safely delete the backups.

I tried the solution someone posted on the first page with no luck...

I'm not having problems with pictures, just with my videos I took back with my 3gs and now trying to sync to my iphone 4.

These are the steps I've tried all with no luck....

The solutions I've tried so far with no luck are as follows....

•Erase videos/pics and resync them
•tried changing the folder permissions via ssh
•tried syncing the vids/pics from a different folder
•erased "iPod photo cache" within the vids/pic folder (read that tip on the Apple website)
•ssh'd into var/library/mobile/media/photodata and deleted the following files... 1.Photos.sqlite 2. PhotosAUX.sqlite
3. com.apple.photos.caches_metadata.plist

If someone can think of anything else to try or has a proper solution, please by all means let me know!

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply but if you read my last post I mentioned I tried that already with no luck. I must admit I got kinda excited though, it seemed like that would do the trick, but unfortunately it didn't.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Maybe you should backup your phone, then restore it again then try the solution again!

Another good suggestion but I know that won't help because 1) I already tried that, and even set it up as a new iPhone and not just from a backup. 2) I tried to sync some videos to my mom's iPod and the same thing happened to hers.

So if it's happening to TWO different devices what does that mean? Does it mean my videos are screwed up or does it mean the 4.x software doesn't play nice with my videos taken on a 3GS....

I don't know what the problem is but it's super annoying and confusing.

This has been happening to me. All of my photos I downloaded to use as wallpapers appear fine, screen shots appear fine, but photos I have taken myself turn black after a certain amount of days.

I've used the method above to delete the 3 files, and then did a hard reset but the photos still appear as black boxes.

Someone from the Apple support website mentioned the thumbnail problem could be caused from the following...

COPY & PASTE:

"If you followed the procedure to delete the photo database and let the phone rebuild it and you still have a problem it is most likely due to one or more corrupted image files in the camera roll. Most likely it is photos that you received in email or MMS messages. Email these photos to yourself and delete them."

The problem is, I have close to two hundred of those types of photos in my photo library....I'm thinking of moving all those type of pictures to a different folder and resyncing the photo library, and see if this stops my video thumbnails from blacking/whiting out.

Any thoughts anyone??
