Two screenies:

1) my iPad keyboard - showing it looks the same

2) No multitouch gestures in Settings - unless you have to enable it somewhere else first

HOLY MOTHER OF WOW. THAT KEYBOARD IS DEFINITELY DIFFERENT IN A MOST IMPORTANT WAY: the space key extends one key further to the right, now all the way over to the ! Key. That shrinks the 123 key on the right which is HUGE for me.

I am a right-thumb spacebar guy. I use my iPad aLOT (see my signature) and am an extremely fast typist in landscape mode. The only big problem i have typing is that i more-than-occasionally tap the 123 key instead of the spacebar, which of course shifts the keyboard and results in typed gibberish that the auto correct cannot parse.

I dont recall where, perhaps in my blog, but ive complained about this in the past. WOOHOO!!!!!!!!

Pinch to home screen keeps app in tray

Pressing home button should close app and take it out of tray.

Or vice versa

I would have loved this

Bit unfair for anyone who's lost a finger though! No fast app switching for you!

To be blunt, this is a really bad idea. Firstly you would be restricting the benefits of multitasking to only those who know the "secret handshake". That's a major step backwards from the current situation where everyone gets the benefit whether they are an expert or a beginner.

Secondly Apple's design of iOS is intended to abstract away the concept of whether an App is "running" or not. There should be very few situations where manually quitting an App is necessary. Why should this rare operation be made easier?

Does one of the new gestures close an app down, rather than put it on the multi-task bar as I think it's silly to have every single program you stop using get put there.

You only really would want the programs you use regularly put there, not everything.

Apple didn't help by calling it a multitasking bar as that's not really what it is; it's really a list of recently-used Apps. Calling it a multitasking bar makes people used to desktop OSs expect it work in a certain way that goes against the way that multitasking works in iOS. Personally I would have limited it to only show the 12 or 18 most recently used Apps. If you are going back further than this than it would probably be faster and easier to just go back to the Springboard.

As to having a guesture for quitting an App, I again think that this goes against the design of iOS. As I mentioned above the idea is that the concept of a "running" App is abstracted away. Most users should never need to worry about manually shutting down Apps. In practice this approach is working out well for me. I never manually close Apps and my iPad doesn't seem to slow down, become unresponsive or use loads of battery. The only exception to this is Feedler and that's because the App itself is buggy and I really should look at replacing it.

I agree about the multitasking title, it is very misleading, and actually I'm sure someone could if they early wanted to pull them up about using an incorrect term in advertising.

However, If the swipe is not currently used, I wonder why a swipe down off the bottom could not of been used to kill an app rather than load it onto the bar.

Actually, I completely disagree. Functionally, "multi-tasking" on the iPad provides a vastly similar *overall* experience for the user as it does on OSX. Add iOS 4.3's ability to 4-finger swipe from app to app and it'll feel even more so like multi tasking on OSX.

the only major bug that has happened to me in the beta is when having 4 or 5 apps running and i'm changing apps by the 4 fingers, it freezes on a app and i can't interact, can't press the home button or pinch. I can lock it then pressing the lock switch again and it's telling me to 'slide to unlock' but i can't, the animation is still moving. The only i can fix this by holding home and lock button to turn off then turn it back on. This happened to me 3-4 times already when only downloaded last night. other than that it runs ok

Can someone check if you can send videos through AirPlay in Safari? You can't do it over 4.2.1. It just does sound only :/

But I'm a lefty ;). Couldn't they have extended it the other way :(.

That screen shot of your keyboard has a longer space bar than before. Just compared it to mine running 4.2.1.

The right side 123 button is smaller now.

They are amazing, I think your average consumer won't use them, but enthusiasts like us, it's so much better than using the home button.

Apple will deffo market the new multi touch gestures for it, so maybe the average consumer will use them.

Anthony, I just read your blog...good stuff. I write a tremendous amount on my ipad...and agree that the keyboard change is super important. Apple, can we PLEASE, for the love of all that is good in the world, PLEASE, GIVE us a freaking a pair of arrow keys?!?!?

However, I am desktop by day, iOS by night. No choice but to use desktop at work because I teach in a computer lab.

Having sad that, a room full of students on ipads would be pretty cool...maybe I should write a grant.

Anyway, I am curious about your thoughts on Google sync...the "one workflow to rule them all". I am desperate for a solution of syncing to my desktop life by day, to my ios life by night. I have iPhone and iPad.

Has there been any changes since your blog in November? I don't really need something that syncs with google docs perse, as much as something that syncs between something that is installable on igoogle so I can access it on my desktop when I am in the classroom, yet still sync on both the iPad and iPhone. I am mainly talking about notes. I feel like Jim Carey on Bruce Almighty drowning in notes. Most things i take note of don't need to be kept on paper...I just want to get organized on this.

I did recently settle on Calendar Goo to sync Google Calendar with Google Tasks, and despite the lack of features of other tod and task managers, I am please with that system, if I can just get a handle on notes.

Everybody else, your thought as well, even though so far this is off topic. In an effort to not create yet another thread, I have been trying to find another solution here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1077504/ if yup would be so kind as to reply ere...or point me to another of you posts on this topic.

Actually, I have a question on this thread's topic. Will such an early announcement of 4.3 kill development of 4.2.1 untethered jb?

I have been patiently waiting to update my 3.2 iPad, waiting for the untethered update, but am thinking that 4.3 may cause the jbers to not want to expose any newly found exploits?

True, if they push it, they will still have a lot of people adopt it, however my grandfather has an iPad and loves it, but somehow it's already hard enough for him to get the button goes to the home screen concept.

I think alot of people will continue to use the home button most of the time. It deffinetly won't go the way of the dowdow.

I would recommend iAWriter to you if you write a lot. It has arrow keys as well as previous word/next word keys and double quote key in an additional row on top of the keyboard as you type. It also turns off spell check etc. for concentration.

Regarding untethered jb, I believe Comex has confirmed no untethered for 4.2.1. He is waiting either for Verizon phone or for 4.3.

The tethered jb on iPad is not too bad - I'm rocking it right now. The reboot cycle using redsn0w is very easy to do. Do you really reboot your iPad a lot. FYI, the update KEEPS all your jb app settings, so you would just need to reinstall them. The 3.2 -> 4.2 update was a lot smoother than the updates before, esp. for jailbroken device.

I figured as much.

Yeah, I am ready to give it a try. I just need to know if the power to the USB has a hack to fix Apple's grandiose scheme to keep us from using the device in any way other other than they plan.

Thanks!!
