4 finger gesture on last early -08 MBP Penryn?

Yep. But you have to do some hacking to get four-finger gestures working.

Search the forums for "MacBook Pro four-finger gestures" and you'll find a really long thread describing how to do it.

I followed the instructions in this thread, and it works perfectly in my early 2008 MBP.
