42mm band on a 38mm watch?

I want to get the 38mm sport version but I love the leather loop. On Apple's website it only shows the 42mm version of the leather loop band. Can I buy the 42mm band and use it on the 38mm watch? The 38mm or 42mm only refers to the length of the device not the width correct?

The widths of the watches are different too, so the leather loop won't fit on a 38mm watch, and the modern buckle won't fit the 42mm watch.

It won't work, the 42mm is wider than the 38mm

It's not going to fit. The bands are designed to seamlessly fit each casing.
