As opposed to what? The "truth" that Apple conspired to deny a select population of macrumors forum devotees for the sole purpose of annoying them? Every supply chain can be constrained if the demand for the product overwhelms the supply of the weakest component. This isn't "dumb" or an "excuse", but merely reality. If Apple misses the self-imposed deadline, it will simply reflect an overestimate of production rates vs order rates over the periods in question (random made up example: # of orders between xx:04-09 promised by 5/27, units produced between 5/7-5/21 for the 5/27 deadline). No need to "come up" with anything. Chances are they were conservative in this estimate, hence the countless early deliveries of watches.
