Steel watches are meant to be scratched. My expensive mechanical watches have zillions of scratches on them, so I'm not worried about an Apple Watch. The steel is there to protect the internals.

I am challenging myself to keep my new 44 SS scratch-free (even from micro-scratches). I'm pretty good at not banging my watches on to surfaces and I'll see where this goes.

As I have learned from the 2 days I've been wearing and cleaning mine, the surface is not prone to scratching very easily as I suspected. I've worn the watch with all sorts of jackets with different material, cleaned it gently with a microfibre cloth several times and I still do not see any micro-scratches even under heavy lighting like the iPhone X flash light or under the sun.

I've always wondered if the stainless steel Apple is using this time is tougher. Although not a mention in their own description of the watch, I'm starting to believe it's a more durable material than the ones before it.

Is there a thin outer layer on it that'll eventually go and reveal the actual SS inside or not? Only time will tell and I will update my findings.

ALL SS watches scratch. :) Part of the charm/character etc

Is it a problem if the liquid polish on these cloths contacts the watch's screen? If so, how do you avoid that?

I never had to tape off the screen, simply take your finger and use the most minimal amount of edge on the cloth, going in very small circles slowly and you won’t have any problem. Also, if the cloth does come in contact with the display, have a clean microfiber cloth at ready to remove any excess, the worst case scenario is that it could cause a separation with the oleophobic coating.

Took me less than 6 days to get my first abrasion. Don’t know how I got it but no worries.... it buffed right out with the cape cod cloth. No way you can stay scuff free.

Good luck, my S4 screen had micro scratches that you can only see under extremely bright light as soon as I opened it.

With the regular Stainless model, that’s just part of the acceptance, is that it will scratch because it is a very soft, dense metal. Anyone purchasing this model should be at least aware of this and even your fingernail rubbing too hard will scratch the stainless. I personally think it gives the watch Character somewhat, as long as someone can accept the scratches, Being it’s envitable.
