I did not pick up yesterday on the fact that Apple switched to a 45nm processor. This could have a dramatic impact on heat, especially with the new GPU!

scott, you and I were discussing it yesterday in this thread. you didn't know that's what i meant by the 4W TDP drop?

    old processors 21W, new 17W.

Sorry, I did not put 2 and 2 together. That discussion focused on the GPU. I was really surprised to see today that the CPU itself had changed to 45nm tech. I think this will have a really big impact on the heat generated by the device. Wonder why more people aren't talking about this. Lord knows they've complained enough about the heat/noise of the MBA.

I agree. I wasn't even that excited about the GPU update but the 45nm is huge. I think it's because Steve didn't explicitly highlight it in the keynote, which is odd since it's the thing that's going to make me buy a new one.

They are heading in the right direction with the added port and lower heat.

    tricky position for Steve

He likely didn't want to call attention to a major design flaw in a machine that has been on the market for the better part of a year.

You could talk about it without it seeming like a design flaw. To be fair, Intel didn't update the chip to accommodate the Air, they updated it in the normal progression of Moore's Law. 45nm, larger cache, less heat-- these are things that will help all computers that use the chips, not just the Air.

    select company

The Voodoo machine, as far as I know, is the only other machine that uses this chip. Most computers - if they used this chip - wouldn't have the overheating problem because they have better internal air circulation than the Air.

But whatever the case, this is a welcome development. Now we have to see how much more heat the new graphics unit produces than the old one. I suppose it's better to have the heat distributed between two points inside the box.

What's the added port? Missed that. Thanks.

They didn't add it, they just exchanged micro-DVI for mini-DP. It's still three ports only (headphones, USB, display).
