What do some of these numbers mean, exactly? Business should do $12 million? Is that ad revenue + membership dues? What is the 12x multiple?

There are estimates. Blogs aren't exactly a cut and dry source for income. Here's an explanation of the multiples:

A site with traffic doubling year-over-year was give a higher multiple than one with flat traffic. Because not all blogs make money, we looked at multiples of operating income and revenue. These are completely estimates because of the tiny number of blogs which have been sold and lack of information about what the multiples may have been.

I just read this. Pretty good, though it seems very speculative. Whether or not its accurate, it hardly hurts to have potential buyers think you're worth that much :) I think Arn needs to release a photograph of him sipping champagne covered in bling so we can match up our image with his new valuation. :)

MacRumors Worth $85 Million

2.MacRumors: $85 million.Blog knows more about Apple than Apple management does. It ranks No. 2,700 in Alexa. Compete shows 544,000 visitors and moving up quickly. Quantcast puts global unique visitors at 5.3 million. Page views at 33 million, which seems a bit high. Advertising looks high-end and solid, probably at least $30 per page CPM. Business should do at least $12 million and have a high margin, estimated at 60%. At a 12x multiple.

Okay, let's getting the bids started...

I'll raise you two American quarters and an eight-year old non-operating PC. And Arn, you'll have to come south a bit from Canada to get it too.

You mean Arn makes 11 million per year now?!!?? WTF?

No the profit from the site should be $85 million * 5% or about $4 million dollars.

Of course maybe its a Facebook style valuation, which means Arn probably earns as much as Steve Jobs's salary from the site :p.

Woah, that sounds pretty impressive. I wonder how much of that $85 million valuation actually represents profits coming in. Surely if MR was doing that well it wouldn't need people to contribute $25 a year to support it?

Also, has Arn ever revealed official visitor statistics for the site before? I'm curious to know how the audience is split across various countries.

The rest of the list is pretty interesting as well. Ars Technica is an impressive site that I visit now and then but where's Engadget? I thought that would be pretty popular. I'm also embarrassed to admit that I visit The Superficial on a daily basis, purely for ironic reasons obviously ...
