Shut downs takes ~20 seconds

I wouldn't say my macbook pro is running slow because its only happening in the shut downs. When I start it up, it is unbelievably fast on getting from the gray screen to fully functional. But the shut down is almost painful and after I click shut down I have to wait 15-20 seconds before the computer shuts down. Is there anyway that I can fix this?
 
My MBP takes about that long too. I don't really care; I just deal with it (it's faster than my work laptop).
 
This is normal. All Apple laptops in the past couple of years do this. It basically does a hibernation. So even if you remove the battery it will come back. If you open from sleep it looks normal. But if you completely lose power then press the power button, you get a greyed out screen that looks like you screen when you went to sleep and in 15 seconds or so are back were you left off. The downside is that it has to write all the memory contents out to disk before it sleeps. If you have 4GB of memory it takes even longer.
 
Ok I went to the Apple support forum and one guy had the exact same problem and all he did was eject his Bootcamp partition. I tired it and my MBP shut down after like a second.

So I figured out the problem. It is my Bootcamp partition but what does this have to do with the shut down and what does ejecting it do?
 
Oops, sorry I misread I thought you were talking about sleep.

Not sure why your shutdown is taking so long. I have one machine with a bootcamp partition and I don't think it takes that long to shutdown.
 
Really? It can't be just me though. I found lot of users having to wait a lot of time just for the MBP to shut down and if they eject the disc the problem gets solved.

I want to know what ejecting the disc do actually?

Try to eject the partition and see if the shutdown is faster. :)

You eject the partition by going to "Untitled" in the desktop and right clicking it and selecting eject. It always comes back once you restart though so don't worry

just ejected the boot camp partition via finder (right-click, eject), and restarted. it happened almost instantaneously!
 
15" MBP penryn 2.4 here, 200gb 5400 drive/4gb ram

while running Firefox, adium, mail, smc fan, istat menu widget:

Once i hit ctrl-alt-option-eject, shutdown takes <10 seconds.

bootcamp partition with XP, 25GB in size. BT keyboard and such.

not sure why you all are having forever times.

10.5.2 as well, all updated.

Right now, all I can think of is just ejecting the Bootcamp partition before shutting down. The n I don't have to wait 20+ seconds to shut down.

I did the same thing and my MBP shut down instantly. Ejecting the drive does seem to effect shutdown times.
 
what annoys me is when a program, such as limewire, transmission, or adium cancels the shutdown...because i haven't closed them individually.

Is there anyway to set it up so it overrides and force quits everything...in other words...it SHUTS DOWN when i click "shut down"
 
I have boot camp with xp sp2 installed and it doesn't take 20 seconds, it might take like 10, but no more than that...
though, next time i turn it off i will check and see how long it takes...

Yep. and macFuse. Is that what's causing the problem?
I guess I don't really need it right now. Is there a way to uninstall them? They are not in applications or in utilities and I don't want to delete files from the system folders.
 
not too sure, but it's worth finding out if those without the slow shutdowns have ntfs-3g installed too.
 
mine takes a good minute or 2 to shut down (of course I only reboot every month or more) I dont have a bootcamp partition or any other partition.

Could it be that it is clearing the stuff out in swap?

uptime - 5 days: Swap - 1.25GB (I need more RAM! :p )
 
I've found that clearing caches has really helped my shutdown times. It used to take me about 30-40 seconds to shut down. Then i got Onyx and cleared all my caches (and I do this almost daily) and it takes about 2-3 seconds to shut down. I don't even see the spinning wheel.

So my recommendation is, get Onyx, clear caches. Run maintenance scripts. You should see an improvement as it did for me.

I never tried Onyx. I only heard people saying its good. Guess I'll try it right now and see how it goes.

I'm pretty sure I've got those two installed also.
 
I have verbose mode on and it tells me it has to stop all the VMWare adapters. If I remove VMWare, it's fast.

cmd-opt-alt- eject FORCES SHUTDOWN.

my adium and limewire go quietly after that. you can also set limewire to not confirm shutdown in its pref.
