I tried to force shut down while having the Bootcamp partition un-ejected and it took my MBP 18 seconds exact for it to shut down.

ntfs-3g causes slow shutdowns

I'm almost positive about ntfs-3g causing slow shutdowns.
every time I boot in verbose mode (hole cmd-v while booting), it'll also shutdown in verbose mode, and I always notice a 30 seconds wait for ntfs-3g process to kill itself. Eventually, the system will shut the process forcefully.

I just tried uninstalling ntfs-3g (left bootcamp partition mounted) and my MBP shutdown instantly.

try removing ntfs-3g/macFuse and see if it had any affect on shutdown time.

Isn't there a terminal command that can uninstall ntfs 3g and macfuse?

I don't really need both of these right now since I moved over essential files from mac to windows.

And what about those people who say they have both ntfs3 and macFuse and they don't have any problems with shut downs?

I have verbose mode on and it tells me it has to stop all the VMWare adapters. If I remove VMWare, it's fast.

It is not a MacBook but an iMac and I have a shutdown of some 20 seconds as well. No ntfs-3g, no Bootcamp, but I do use VMware Fusion... So a few questions:

a. I reckon that starting in Verbose Mode also shuts down in Verbose Mode, or do I interpret your statement wrong?
b. What do you mean with "remove VMware"? Outright uninstall of the program? Then again, Fusion has been on this machine from day one, and the bitbucket shutdown in less than 3 seconds before...

P.S.: I already started a thread in the OS X forum as I doubt this is MacBook or iMac specific (as is demonstrated by this post).

36 seconds normal shutdown..

5 seconds if I unmount windows vista partition.!!!!!!!!!!!

I also have ntfs-3g installed

I've noticed it to, before I installed bootcamp my MBP shut down instantly, but ever since bootcamp it takes about 1minute, it's a pain in the ass, and ntfs-3g didn't change a thing!

Anyone knows of a way to never mount the bootcamp partition under leopard? I found some threads about it but they did'nt work under leopard..

what annoys me is when a program, such as limewire, transmission, or adium cancels the shutdown...because i haven't closed them individually.

Is there anyway to set it up so it overrides and force quits everything...in other words...it SHUTS DOWN when i click "shut down"

I usually just close the lid...

Why are you actually trying to shut down your MacBook?

that is very much besides the point. It should shut down when i tell it to. That means force quitting everything. even windoze does that.

Sorry to bump this but anyone know how to uninstall ntfs 3g and macfuse? I searched google but did not find anything.

I solved mine when I defragmented my hard drive. If you don't have defrag software (which isn't in OSX because defragging is not needed in 90%+ of the time), you can do a back up and restore--Time Machine and then restore computer from Time Machine--if you don't have Leopard it's a good opportunity to get it!

Try this

I know this is an old Thread but for people still having this problem try this fix, it worked for me.

In Terminal type.

cd /
sudo chown root:admin /

Hope it works for you :)

What about CleanMyMac?

Have you tried MacPaw's CleanMyMac? I did and it worked wonders for my MBP with SnowLepard:). Easy to install, easy to use... ok you still have to buy a lifetime licence (30$) to gain full use of it, but still if it can solve 500Mb of stuff on the free trial version, it's worth a try. And it saved me the job of reinstalling all the Bootcamp and stuff.:apple:
