Psystar Demos 'Open Computer' on Video

Despite Gizmodo's claim that Psystar was a hoax, Psystar has posted a video demonstrating 3 "Open Computer" systems running Mac OS X, Ubunu and Windows XP.



In mid-April, news of Psystar's OpenMac clone (since renamed 'Open Computer') exploded across the web. While there have been some questions raised about their legitimacy, they claim to be shipping products at this time.

The technology to run Mac OS X on generic PC hardware is well established, so the actual claims are not difficult to accomplish. Psystar, however, ran into some problems handling orders when they were initially dropped by their credit card processor because their "product was substantially different from what was described in [their] application".

Without verification from any satisfied customers, we still can not endorse the product, as the Mac OS X installation may require some special care to avoid breaking in future updates. Still, for now, it appears they are still trying to be the first Mac OS X clone manufacturer. Apple has not made any comment about Psystar.

Perhaps most disconcerting, however, is a message that MacFixIt reader, Tim Thomason, received from Psystar's support team, which reads:

"We absolutely do not support customers attempting to install the Leopard operating system on our Open Computer themselves. This is due to a difficult process that we go through to get Leopard to function on our computers. We encourage you to purchase an open computer, and select the option to have Leopard Pre-installed."

Of course, the reader asked what options were available in the event of a major system failure requiring Leopard reinstallation, to which Psystar suggested a return shipment to the company.

"Currently, (shipping the computer back to us) is the only option available. If the HDD dies, you can ship it to us for $50 plus shipping, so we can replace it for you."

Let me say that one part again,

So if ANYTHING were to happen users are either SOL or have to pay Psystar MORE money to ship it back, have them re-install (and more than likely go through your files beforehand) then ship it back???????????????

Even our Leopard system, an operating system not famous for it's gaming capabilities, is capable of running this full version of Quake 4, with all of the settings turned to the max.

I rolled my eyes. There's nothing technically wrong or broken with the 3D software architecture in Leopard. OpenGL is used on the PS3. It is just the hardware Apple sells is not best suited for gaming.

Get 'em while there hot.

Good on them for having a go, but it should be “get 'em before we get shut down”.

What a terrible “advertisment” for Final Cut Pro. Apple will probably be more concerned about that first and foremost.

I don't get this. It's priced and marketed as an alternative to a Mac Mini, right? Basically cheaper and more powerful. But it also requires a fair amount of computer sophistication for it to continue operating correctly because it's not supported by , and updates will likely break it.

My perception is that the main market for the lower cost Mac Mini are the less sophisticated users who just want a cheaper Mac that works. Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't that just who this "Open Computer" product is NOT built for?

Anyway, no thanks, I'll stick with brand products!

Just a PC_EFI-based hackintosh

Pystar relies on osx86 developer netkas' PC-EFI software, which they apparently just assumed was free for the taking (& selling) without bothering to ask him about it. Obviously he's not too happy about it and neither are the folks using it, as this could obviously bring the wrath of Apple Legal down upon his shoulders, or just simply piss him off enough to stop developing PC_EFI.

As of 15 April, Pystar is violating his licence.

anyone who buys one of these is mad, a very grey company selling a system that runs a hacked os (efi part anyhow) that is likely to corrupt on an update and donot allow you to re-install leopard yourself or provide any disks, sounds great. apple needs to stop this or the ignorant customers may associate the bad experience with osx.

oh, and yourll NEVER see this, there is such little demand, dont confuse a couple of geeks on a forum with real demand, the majority of pc users never upgrade anything in a computer, and of the ones that do / have its only the ram, they even prefer an external HD when they have a tower pc, this plus apple moving more and more to integrated 'consumer electronics' i.e. the macbook air being sealed unit means you will never see the fabled x-mac!

There are numerous options for backing-up and restoring hard-disk images from a CD or DVD. Some are even free.

Make a backup of your OS installation when it arrives. If it breaks, restore from the backup.

A tiny bit of calm reasoning can avoid so much pointless panic.
