Hi. I‘m not sure, but I’ve read that we can use the 48MP only with ProRaw format and not for normal jpg/heic. Is this correct? In that case I will not buy 14 pro and I stay another year with 13 pro.

MKBHD said that it’s only for ProRAW in his first impressions video. Lame if true.
 
Lol full frame sensors can just about handle 40-50mp (Sony A1, Canon R5 etc) let alone a 1/1.28” iPhone camera sensor

The reason they decided on making HEIC / JPEGs 12 mp is probably because they don’t have the computational power / algorithms to make compressed 48mp look good on such a small sensor

I’m even skeptical about the results with ProRAW. Yes you get more information so can raise exposure in shadows etc, but the fact that in the demo, they only showed one (very bright conditioned) example of a zoomed 48mp photo is telling

You’re probably going to get very noisy images with muddy detail

The real question is.. what looks better, 13 pro with the smaller sensor, or 14 pro with the larger sensor, quad pixel situation

It is still using the whole 48MP sensor to capture the picture, it will just condense it to a 12MP file. But the end result is still a higher quality picture, than if it was taken with a 12MP sensor.

Lol ok. Remains to be seen.

Try printing a 12MP photo on a large canvas, you need at least 32MP for a good print! Advertising iPhone 14 Pro and its 48MP, while in reality for everyday photos the megapixels remains 12, is shameless.

Apple does not use the higher resolution to bring 8K to video, nor does it push too hard on the 48-megapixel photos, partly because the iPhone only shoots this way in ProRAW mode and only if you decide to do so (otherwise it stays at 12 megapixels), it just needed more megapixels because the power achieved by the processor allowed it to process them.

The 48 megapixels are used to increase the amount of data to feed to the Deep Fusion and Smart HDR system, and the result according to the company is much sharper photos.

The biggest advantage to the full 48MP image is for editing, thus unlocking the full resolution only for RAW makes a ton of sense. It keeps the file sizes for JPEG images smaller, no one will need a full 48MP image for posting to socials, but the option is there for professional or hobbyist photographers.

You are right. But I don‘t want to use raw format but jpeg and not only 12MP. Why not?

Very easy to convert raw to HEIC. There are many times when I accidentally activate raw. What I do is to use shortcuts and within secs, I get the compressed heic version

It‘s still a workaround. I don‘t need Raw Photos.

It's a balance of using all of the megapixels available to improve a smaller compressed image format, with a smaller file size, for the average user while also providing the serious photographer a solution that they will be familiar with.

You have to remember your target audience when it comes to printing. Unfortunately when it comes to printing there is more than just bigger size print = more megapixels needed. Billboard size prints can be done with 2mp the dpi doesn't need to be high because your viewing distance is so far. Using your example of 12MP on a large canvas the true answer is that it depends on the intended viewing distance.

Yes, but I still don‘t understand why I can‘t have a 48MP jpeg.

Come on, we gotta give those servers some compression work to do... I wonder how much processing compression takes (I'm not into photo editing, I do music and video) but if it causes more strain on trash social media I'm all for it

Hmmmm, are we sure about this though? I can’t find any footnotes on this on Apple’s website and they normally add stuff like this. I wouldn’t be surprised if it requires ProRAW but we need confirmation one way or another from Apple.

And yes, I know who MKBHD is :p
