You think ?

Sorry if I did not go in to better detail. The issue is how consumers look at particular price points.

IMO a Mac at under $500 has greater potential thna a Mac at $600. It is my experience in sales of consumer goods that there are price points that drive the sale. These are between the the $100 and $500 price points. Above that level the consumer starts to question the "value" of the purchase.

That is a good point.

There is a similar (critical) point for business purchases. This is the amount that a manager can spend on a purchase for his department without needing to get approval from higher-level management.

This is usually around $500-- so he can buy a coffee pot (or somesuch) but not an office machine (computer, copier, etc.).

I like the iPod mini-esque one I think it's really nice!

The width of the CD/DVD slot seems too large (wide). A typical slot is as wide as my closed, flat, hand-- thumb to pinkie (and my hand is small).

The slot in the pics & movie are much wider that the man's hand.

You are so right on in so many ways.

Consumers are driven at certain price points. Many years ago when Chrysler bought Renault, they ad a vehicle that both crossed produced, It was never a hot seller in the market. A dealer said to them that if he could sell that at a certain price, he could sell what ever they could give him. In the end he provided that he was right.

Recently in my industry, Nikon took an lowered the price of the Nikon D2H to $1999US. Within hours we sold what we had, and most if not all of of future orders. This is evidnse that consumers see a particular price as being a "must buy"

IMO Apple need this iMac mini to meet a under $500 price point to be able to really sale.

I figure if it was a media centre it would have a scart socket on the back as well? Although this is kind of what I am envisioning as it fits in really well with the iMac and iBook look.

Plays 45 RPM records.

In the elevator shot, that machine has what looks like a mini-dvi or mini vga plug next to the two usb ports.

The drive looks like the right size to me but I don't think it is real. First off, it just doesn't look real. The images on the box are pasted on, not printed on. Where are the vents? And finally, here in America it is spelled center not centre. I could ignore one of these but not all of them.

When did Chrysler buy Renault? I just googled but can't find anything about it except this http://www.renault.com/gb/groupe/accords_p1.htm which doesn't mention it?

I may have my facts twisted. But Renault was involved with a Chrysler badged car. It was a very poor seller. In the end the agreement was for Chrysler to sell X number of vehicles before penalties were to kick in. I think it was done to meet the CAFE mileage requirements. USAToday was the source of my info. It ended being a good study of economics of prices points as I remember it.

I think the name of the car was the Alliance.

Chrysler never bought Renault. Renault bought American Motors Corporation (AMC- remember the Gremlin & Pacer?) and put out a couple of cars while the company slowly sank into further red ink.
Renault then pulled out of the American market and put the assets that were remaining up on the block.
Chrysler picked up the assets and created a new brand out of the orphan vehicles (Eagle) and even added a Mistubishi product to the fold (Eagle Talon)
Chrysler fell on hard times once again and finally killed off the Eagle brand in the late '80s.
That's the scoop.

Aren't these bits (I highlighted really badly..) the vents? It looks like there is a layer of removable cellophane around the centre thats obscuring them?

That is oh-so fake. It looks like it is made out of styrofoam-note the un-even edges in the image with the ports. Also, the ports are a straight lift from an iBook.
Notice how light it appears in the video and the poor (and re-used look) of the inner packaging.
fakefakefakefake.
Clever idea though, to the best of my knowledge Apple hasn't copywrited iHome yet. iWork on the other hand is currently "coming soon" on the web.

BTW: nice fake.

I already assumed it was fake that's why I said I guess this one has been posted before as opposed to This is the new headless iMac! ;)

At least it's a better effort than the fake iMac one, the grey one in a lift!

+ I don't think they would use the Brit spelling of Center. Rember the supposed iMac pics in the elevator. It was close but a fake. Prob the same thing here.

The bottom eMac is 1.25GHz G4 with a system bus speed of 167MHz. If the above is true, and the "low-end" headless Mac will be less of a performer than even the $799 eMac, how is it that the preliminary specs of the headless are similar? Somehow this doesn't jive. Remember, the comment is about "performance," not features.
They may be considering the fact (rumor) that the eMac will migrate to the G5 in the next iteration. G5 or not, the eMac is due for an upgrade. It's been 9 months with the 1.25 ghz G4.

I assume they would use localised spelling, it's one of those things that if it isn't changed gives the impression that they haven't really bothered. Especially on something as visible as the box itself!

Another thought, wouldn't the photo on the top of the box be the other way around? So when you held the handle the image was the correct way up?

Still..it is a nice collection of hardware (boxes anyway..) in that corner!

It almost had me, till you mentioned this  But it is a damn bloody good fake. Alien-autopsy quality fake. Damn. The truth is really out there.... Who the hell would have gone through this elaborate hoax? I like the video and photo sequence, like this was somewhere in the backrooms of the MacWorld convention center and either an employee or security dude or something managed to sneak in (I have worked in major Tech conferences before, 1 at Moscone Center SF)....

Sadly, even the super slick boys at J&R in New York will look at you in confusion. America just doesn't DO Scart.

Interesting conjecture. Of course there is the vague possibility (optimist to the last here) that Apple is wiley enough to know that other countries do also exist and that in these times of Yank-bating a properly spelled CENTRE would help to sell the product in the English speaking world. From this one might also deduct (except for the fact that this is a fake of course) that this product is a demo unit that was supplied to the Apple centre in Regent Street, London (England - that's near France). Said Britischer spy will now have to be shot for being stoopid enough to reveal his existnece in such a clumsy fashion. Who says the CIA has all the problems....

I guess this is one of the many problems with design, should a scart socket be included so as to provide functionality for everyone in Europe (and wherever else uses Scart) but at the same time create an extra cost everywhere else as well as having a redundant port, or should they try and make everyone in Europe try and use an unfamiliar connection type but keep costs down?

If Apple do come out with a product that hasn't been regionalised at all - from the connection types to the spelling then even if it is low cost I can't see people buying it as it will end up being problematic to use.

How do you connect DVD players, VCR's etc to your TV? I assumed Scart was a worldwide format..but then I thought that about A4,A5 (etc) paper!
