Let me begin by saying that I understand the 4G indicator is for the HSPA+. I am considering buying the unlocked 4S, due to some upcoming trips abroad. Now, while I am in the US connected to ATT's HSPA+ on a factory unlocked iPhone 4S, will it display the 4G icon? I cannot seem to find anything concrete on whether of not it will only show on a ATT locked 4S. It would be nice to have the 4G indicator to know when it is connected to the HSPA+.

I've also never seen the 4G indicator when connected to HSPA+ here in NZ. I believe that it's specific to AT&T.

Thank you for all of the replies. I'm not worried about it displaying 4G when I am abroad, just when I am at home in Arizona. One of the articles I read made it seem like it will only work on the 4S locked into the AT&T network, and not on the unlocked model even running on the same HSPA+ network.

I have a factory unlocked 4s it works fine everywhere. I use it on Roger in Canada and ATT in the US.

You know it's just a gimmick right?
Wether it displays 4G or 3G up there you will get the same exact speeds.
My 4S is on 5.0.1 and still shows 3G up there and still connects on hspa+ and gets great speeds with AT&T.
Maybe I should switch the indicator to 5G since I'm jb to look and feel extra cool:D

It is nothing to do with an AT&T iPhone, an unlocked model shows it. It is to do with the AT&T carrier profile, which is installed when you put in an AT&T sim in the phone and goes when you take the sim out, the reason it doesn't show 4G on another other network is because the network has the 4G indicator turned off in their carrier profile. For example, T-Mobile UK 12.0 has this turned off.

I was gonna say to change the icon to something like H+ like AT&T does on some of their early android phones, at least that was telling the truth!
