Hi all,

ive just bought a new USB-C to HDMI hub which support 4k 60hz over HDMI. Ive plugged it in thinking it would work out the box but I don't get the option of 60hz only 30.

My HDMI cable is compatible and the hub ive bought a Hyper drive GEN2 supports 60hz over HDMI but I still can only get 30hz.

Is 60hz possible or not on a 12" MacBook (2017 running Catalina)

Thanks

I don't know that hub, but USB-C hubs for the 2017 MacBook only support 4K 60 Hz + USB 2 or else 4K 30 Hz + USB 3, but not both 4K 60 Hz + USB 3.

You need to decide what you need. In my case I have a 4K 30 Hz HDMI + USB 3 hub, which I would use to plug in a 1080p 60 Hz monitor plus USB 3 devices. However, I also have a separate 4K 60 Hz HDMI-only dongle with no USB support (aside from a pass-through USB-C port for charging the MacBook), for the rare times I'm plugging into a 4K TV.

EDIT:

I just looked at the specs on that hub. 4K 60 Hz would not likely be supported on the MacBook 12" with that hub AFAIK. You would need a different hub with 4K 60 Hz and USB 2 connectivity (but those types of hubs are quite uncommon), or else you would need to get a dedicated 4K 60 Hz dongle or cable. I would look for a product that specifically lists 4K 60 Hz compatibility with the 12" MacBook in the specs.
