Should we make a thread as to the compatibility of 4K monitors with 2016 and later Thunderbolt 3-equipped MacBook Pros? Actually, it looks like it applies to the Mid-2015 and Mid-2014 as well.

Anyway, I just bought a 2016 MBP and want to use a 4K monitor (not TV) at 60Hz (not 30!) via Thunderbolt 3/USB-C. I was surprised to learn that it's still a pain in the neck to do so, except with the LG UltraFine, but I am buying the cheap Samsung 28" 4K monitor. No 60Hz via HDMI anywhere even with the 2017 model? Wow.

I have found conflicting information regarding the following: Will I be able to use a Thunderbolt 3 to TB2 adapter plus TB2 cable and run it at 60Hz that way?Or is it there a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter available?

Thanks!

2016 MBP+ w/ AMD Pro GPU, when used with the appropriate cable and adapter, can drive HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 monitors up to 4k @ 60 Hz. Optionally you can drive 5k Display by using two DisplayPort 1.2 streams over thunderbolt. You can have, at most, 4x 4k Displays or 2x 5k Displays.

Ignore any Thunderbolt 2 discussions unless you're considering using an actual Thunderbolt Display; it's the only display that will work in that scenario. The TB3 to TB2 adapter does not pass DisplayPort signals, so it won't work with old LED cinema Displays or anything else.

Ok, more than likely either your Cable or the HDMI port on your Screen is running at something less than HDMI 2.0, so you can't get 60Hz.

If you have DisplayPort on your monitor it might be the only way to get 4k resolution.

Either of these cables should work ok so it'll just boil down to your monitor capabilities:
