I haven't used my Apple TV for 3 days but as my Internet seemed a bit slow this morning I checked my router and found that the Apple TV was downloading data flat out and had downloaded 13Gb in a few hours. Not a problem with "normal" Internet but I have satellite Internet with a daytime allowance of just 30Gb/month so in a few hours I've lost a whopping great part of my allowance and now have only 0.5Gb/day to use until September 15th.

What can have happened? I've owned ATV's of one kind or another for 5 years and never had this problem before and when I checked the device there was nothing running to cause this as far as I could see. The only app that had recently update was YouTube. I've now put a parental control on the router to disconnect it from the web until 11pm, after which I can use as much data as I want until 7am but I'm certainly a bit irritated by having lost so much data in such a short time.

Thanks for the suggestions but I have both of these switched off. With such a small data allowance every bit I can save is vital. I should get "real" broadband before the end of the year (he says hopefully!).

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately it doesn't really help that much. I'm still puzzled as to why I should get a sudden download of so much data. I'll just put it down to experience and keep wifi off the device till after 11pm.

I don't want this any more:-

Is it possible it could be App updates, go into App Store then purchased and have a look at Recently Updated section.

might check Home Sharing and setting of HOME app on other devices

Most of the data should be limited to your local network
I also guess you don't have a ios device with a cell link going to internet then back to your satellite link.

The Apple TV is headed to be a always on hub for home control soon so I hope you get resolution.

The Apple TV is already a hub for home control, but that uses very small amounts of data.
if you have a camera in the setup, that will use more, but a "set the lights" or "check the lights" is only a few bytes

this one forum page is the equivalent of a few thousand home automation calls.

and if you don't have any HomeKit devices it uses no bandwidth at all

No, nothing has changed compared to a few days, weeks or even months before. I always have updates set to manual and I don't use it for any home automation. I'll just put it down to some kind of glitch and get by on my remaining 0.5 GB/day for the next 10 days. I can buy more data at a bargain £10/Gb if I get desperate!
