But running FaceTime with H.265 would much more require an encoder rather than decoder. It's the same as with AirPlay Mirroring. You need to get your stream of pictures into H.265 in realtime!

If you'd actually read the linked article you'd see it actually says that the A8 probably includes a specialised HEVC encoder/decoder. As anyone with even a basic understanding of FaceTime would understand. But apparently bothering to read the link would be too much effort wouldn't it?

I another thing to consider when it comes to Apple is that: they are always behind. It will probably be about 3 to 4 years before Apple even considers 4K on their Apple TV. It will be a keynote on a future Apple TV device. You can expect other companies such as Samsung, Sony, or even Motorola to offer 4K before Apple even makes it to the drawing board.

3-4 years? It will most likely be implemented in a 2016 ATV. 4K is moving fast now.

If someone can say for sure that A8 inside aTV indeed has HEVC decoder then 4K moviewatching at "true cinematic" framerate would be yust a software update away.

Sorry, mate! I'm just learning the art.

Fair enough!

I don't think anyone knows for certain whether the A8 in the ATV has a HEVC chip. The teardown by ?ifixit didn't say and I've not seen any reports. I think it probably does but whether Apple chooses to enable it or not for 4K is another matter... They may just enable it for 1080p on the ATV4 so picture quality improves, alongside an ATV5 with 4K.

I think so far the AVC decoding was implemented on the die of ARM and Intel i-CPUs. That makes the discovery impossible for the naked eye.
Still, I believe that for Apple the 4K sits behind the infra (both delivery network and all sorts of licensing questions), rather than technology issues. For them aTV is primarily the iTunes consumption device.
Merry Christmas !

It will have to remain speculation for awhile because currently devs don't have access to it.

However,

Obviously that wasn't a misprint. So I would think the processor is capable of it. Again I'm not saying there will be an update for it, just saying that HEVC should be able to be decoded by the A8 and higher.

While Google does their royalty free codecs like VP8/VP9, Apple has always leaned on MPEG, VCEG, and whoever else for their standards so it only makes sense that if there is a next gen codec in there its going to be h265.
