4k'ish external display for MBPr 15" 2013?

Hello...

My head is spinning a bit because I can't seem to get a definitive enough answer about buying a new external display for my MBP (2013 15" retina).

I believe I need to utilize the HDMI cable to drive a higher'ish resolution display.

What's the newest, best thing out there today that will work for me? LG, Samsung, Dell, most likely...

I would not use HDMI.
Rather, use displayport (at both ends of the cable).

I could be wrong, but I don't think any of the "ultrawide" displays are 4k...

I use a late 2013 MBP linked to an external LG 27UD58. It works perfectly. The only issue is the cable. You need to use DisplayPort 1.2 cable
