Hey all --

I have a lot of data that doesn't need to be on my MBP which has a Samsung 1TB SSD. I'm thinking about buying a mechanical 5400 RPM external drive to have running all the time so when I need something, I can just move it to the local SSD and work with it there. I'll have it plugged into my 2012 MBP via a USB port. Now that I think about it, I may put it in the DVD drive bay, and put the DVD drive into an external enclosure since I don't use it very often at all - if ever.

I know for SSD drives, Samsung is a top choice. What about for 2.5" 4TB (or more) 5400 rpm drives? Are there any preferred companies that people would recommend? It would be on all the time so reliability is a concern. I saw that Seagate has some drives that are made for NAS but wasn't sure if those are junk or not. Is a 5400 rpm drive worth it or should I just get a 7200 rpm drive? Really concerned most with reliability and cost.

Any tips or info anyone has for me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
