Its twice fast in theory, but in practice, its not that much.
Not worth to jump from 3rd to 4th gen just cause of this. When they release quad proc, and other improvements then yes. Till then, i will stick to my 3rd gen.
True they could release this model in february, but when they know they have a ton of people just waiting on buying everything they release, they dont care much that the 3rd gen such an "amazing, amazing" product is wipe out from the scene just in 7 months.

I have an iPad 3 too, but it didn't get any slower than it was before the announcement. It's still working great and with all apps in the iTunes store.

I don't see a reason why many people feel betrayed here. First world problems...

I'll keep my 3 until Apple install a lot better camera. These is no point in changing as I don't play games I actually hate playing computer type games. I would rather be out riding my enduro bike, and being involved with all types of sport.
My wifes iPad 2 is past it use by date so I will change my wife's 2 to a 4. We fly a lot so having a better screen for movies is the most important too us.

Fascinating. I've been toying with the idea of getting a 4. It'll be my first iPad. The only thing that's kept me from preordering is speculation that a thinner/lighter 5 could be right around the corner in March but with this kind of boost that seems less likely.

Is there any actual evidence it uses a quad core gpu? Apple claimed twice as fast which would seem suspect if it was using the same gpu as the ipad 3.

my guess: it's using a 6 core variant clocked a bit higher.

Edit: guess it is still quad core graphics, that's what apples page says. Weird, must just be clocked a bunch higher.

Wow that's fast. My iPad 2 is not looking so good. iPad 4 is calling my name. :)

I'm hopeful that the switch to a Fall release from a Winter/Early-Spring release will result in iPads that last longer before not being able to run the latest version of iOS. Two and a half years (from retail release to discontinuation) for the first generation iPad is ridiculous. Shortest software support lifespan of any iOS device ever. That's wrong. I'm hoping that an A6X iPad released in October will last until at least this time three years from now before speed and iOS compatibility become anywhere near as limited as it is on the first generation iPad today.

Why is that weird? The iPhone 5 with its A6 and dual-core GPU is twice as fast as the 4S with its A5 and dual-core GPU, so why shouldn't the A6X be twice as fast as the A5X and still have quad-core GPU?

I'm so torn! This performance increase just looks too awesome, but my iPad 2 does everything I need from it... Here's hoping to the next one being redesigned and with 128GB! :D

Apple have historically been using "the rule of 1/4th" with regards to clocking their GPU.

  • iPhone 3GS: 600 Mhz Cortex-A8, 150 Mhz SGX535
  • iPad: 1.00 Ghz Cortex-A8, 250 Mhz SGX535
  • iPhone 4: 800 Mhz Cortex-A8, 200 Mhz SGX535
  • iPad 2: 1.00 Ghz dual-core Cortex-A9, 250 Mhz SGX543MP2
  • iPhone 4S: 800 Mhz dual-core Cortex-A9, 200 Mhz SGX543MP2
  • iPad 3: 1.00 Ghz dual-core Cortex-A9, 250 Mhz SGX543MP4
  • iPhone 5: 1.30 Ghz dual-core Swift, 325 Mhz SGX543MP3

The iPad (3,4) will then most likely be 1.40 Ghz dual-core Swift with 350 Mhz SGX543MP4, unless they decided to ditch the "rule of 1/4th".

The A6 doesn't have a dual core gpu, it has a triple core gpu that's clocked a little higher.

Clocking higher burns up more power/heat but saves chip space, I imagine they couldn't quite fit an MP6 and didn't want to mess with the design of the logic board by enlarging the chip footprint given how it's basically just a modded ipad 3.

I'm confussed.

When Apple released the iPad Mini, they dropped the ipad 3 (Retina display , or at least that what i thought anyway)

Now, Apple's re-released the Retina, with A6 chip & Lightning connector ?

Nexus 10 is 1.7 Ghz, and has 2GB Ram, and has higher resolution, thinner/lighter, and is $100 cheaper, and has multiple user accounts... hmm I dont know which one I'm gonna buy...

From all I have seen about Android lately, I am sticking with iOS for the time being.
The multi user account thingie however is a real treat. I don't see myself buying multiple iPads for everybody in the family, so a multi user logon would be a great oportunity for Apple to open new markets.

T.

As an iPad 3 owner, I must say this is one of the worst things to have happened to me in a long time. I really do wonder if Apple hates me?

I'd be pissed if I'd just bought the 3rd gen iPad thinking it would be 'new' for 5-6 months only now to have it outdated already and so much slower than the 4th gen iPad.

Mine often does. Try playing a game like Fifa 13 or Asphalt 7. There are definite frame drops occasionally. Especially in FIFA 13. Like in the replays and some of the other stuff.

Fifa works great for me. I only get hiccups if I get an iMessage.

This. iPhone 5's A6 has 3 GPU cores clocked at 266Mhz. It has the exact same graphics processing power as Sony's Playstation Vita - which has 4 GPU cores at 200Mhz.

£100 cheaper in UK ($160) it's very considerably cheap than ipad mini,
who cares is't plastic or "aluminium" if you only use it for reading.
good it is not a wood :D

Yikes, if my 3rd gen iPad didn't feel obsolete before, it does now after seeing these benchmarks...

Why? Did your 3gen iPad all of a sudden find out there is a 4gen and decide to commit suicide? Is it on strike because a new younger tab came to take it's place?

Statements like yours above are way over the top and frankly silly. You thought your 3 was the best tab in the land and it was awesome for you, now all of a sudden its crap because a new one with better specs came out. Do you see how silly that logic is?

U mean short time upgrades and it is almost same with 2 and 2 times slower than NEW one?
i understand your pain
I got MBP 17 2010, 2 grant laptop, but left out from so many things.
NEVER MIND:mad:
