Hi, I'll start by stating this is a great forum.

I am trying to complete the first step to Mojave by upgrading my 5,1 El Capitan to High Sierra. I have an Apple raid card that I plan to remove in the process. It has bay 1&2, raid 1, Macintosh HD and bay 3&4, raid 1, Time Machine. It also has the HD 5770 graphics card.

I was able to update the firmware to MP51.0089.B00

First attempt failed. I attached an external 1TB SSD via Firewire 800 format HFS+
Ran High Sierra installer from Macintosh HD, basic installation worked, I see the boot and recovery partitions on the external SSD.
Ran the Migration Assistant transferring data from the Macintosh HD, upon reboot I see the boot partition on the SSD as a Raid device? The boot hangs a the first apple logo, the progress bar hangs about 80%. I waited 20 minutes before rebooting to the original raid set.

I think my next attempt will be a USB install to the external SSD.

A second thought is boot from a USB super duper backup, break the raid sets and restore from super duper backup. Then try the High Sierra installation.

Any recommendation on how to proceed?

Thanks!!!
