Good question.

I am wondering the same lol, seeing I am soon going to add a A/V receiver in my room

Hope more people answer.

AFAIK the imac is capable of transferring 5.1 Dolby Digital output through the optical audio out.

As the other two before me said, yes it can. All you'll need is a miniTOSLink to TOSLink cable and you'll be good to go.

sweet! i cant wait to get my monster fiber optic cable 😀

Now just to get myself the Cambridge Audio 540R *drools* 0.006% THD @ 1 kHz 😀

Yep, I can confirm. 5.1 works, but you need DIGITAL speakers, not ANALOG ones. The digital 5.1 speakers with the 3 mini connectors won't work with the iMac. You need the toslink cable, I found one for like 20$.

Dude, dont you have online stores in Canada?

All the major online stores carry Monster Cable or a couple other brand names.

- Best Buy
- Futureshop
- The Source

We don't have online stores like what you guys have in the US.

Guess that's what happens when you have like 1/10th the population.

Plus if I go to a home theater specialist type of store. They have Monster Cable or the higher end stuff lol

It sucks to buy stuff in Canada.

Plus by the time I ordered the cables from Monster. I actually found something here in Canada. I know could of e-mailed them to cancel. Still was to late lol was out the door.
