5.1 Surrond Sound On MBP

I've been researching this like crazy but can't seem to find any real answer so would be grateful for any advice I can get. I finally bought myself a nice set of 5.1 speakers going cheap (Logitech X-540) but have run into more of a problem than expected, how on earth to get 5.1 surround sound from them in MacOS.

I've had a look but all the older threads now seem to refer to discontinued products or a previous OS (I'm on Snow Leopard).

I'd be grateful if someone knew what I would need to get hardware wise and software wise to get 5.1 sound to work.

You bought a set of speakers that expects 5.1 analog inputs. Your MBP outputs 5.1 digital audio over optical.

So, return the speakers and buy a set with the correct optical input. Get a cord like the following to connect the two:

Fantastic you're an absolute star. Shame I have to return the speakers but at least I finally know where to start.
