The wait continues for the iPhone 4S and new iPad to be jailbroken, but for anyone using an iPhone 4 or iPad 2 theres good news. An untethered jailbreak for those devices running iOS 5.1 has finally been achieved by one determined iPhone hacker.
The announcement was made by the iOS security researcher known as pod2g through his Twitter account. The tweet simply said:
Heya! My iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 is now untethered
Until now iOS 5.1 users have had to rely on a tethered jailbreak solution, which meant having to re-jailbreak every time your device required a reboot. With the more desirable untethered solution, the jailbreak is maintained between restarts of your phone or tablet.
pod2g has given no hint as to when this untethered jailbreak will be released to the public, but at least now we know it is possible and only a matter of time before it appears. After which, the focus will move back on to jailbreaking the A5X-based devices and subsequently allowing the iPhone 4S and new iPad to be unlocked for running non-approved apps from the Cydia store. Hopefully that will also appear as an untethered solution.
The A5X devices were jailbroken back in March by MuscleNerd and the Dev Team, but it was just a first step on a single device. All parties involved admitted at the time that there was still a lot of work to do and so the wait continues without an ETA. Soon it will be a question of whether they can produce a solution before the iPhone 5 lands later this year.
Hopefully that signals an impending public release. Either way, it's good news!
