5.76GB of "OTHER"??

My 16gb iPad Mini is showing as having 5.76gb of 'other'. What the heck is 'other', and how do I get rid of it? I understand that some of that is the OS, but surely not that much. I cannot even install IOS8 unless I delete a bunch of stuff as it says it needs over 6gb to install. Help please?

Restore then you could use your iTunes backup or iCloud
