5 bars of ???

I've been having this problem with my service hanging. I get 5 bars but it shows no network?

Is it a network issue or is it a phone issue?

the only way to fix it is to switch in/out of airplane mode. 😕

I have noticed this a couple of times as well. If Airplane mode fixes it, I would assume it has to do with AT&T. But I don't recall this happening on my 3GS.
