I've tried finding some articles/reviews comparing these two. I'm curious as to the quality difference when facetiming between say an Ipad Mini with a 1.2 facetime camera vs say a Ipad pro 9.7 with the 5 megapixel. The devices on the other end will likely be an Iphone 6 and or Iphone 6S. I understand the 6 has the 1.2 and the 6S has the 5.

Thoughts?

The FaceTime video calling will still be 720p, so zero difference on that front. I don't do selfies so I really don't care, but even then, I'd still prefer 5MP over 1.2MP.

1.2 mp is fine for FaceTime as mentioned.

You will look better using a 1.2mp selfie camera to them, then they will look using the 5mp selfie cam to you. 720p stretched out on an iPad is just meh, but it looks relatively sharp on an iPhone.

I FaceTime frequently but I FaceTime myself (iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6S) to check for other differences. Nothing too notable aside from copious feedback.

Is there a way to connect Facetime to an external Cam (like a wifi nanny IP Cam) to Ipad Air? I know of an app"Ismartviewpro" that puts browser based display on my Ipad but I want it to be my video input for Facetime session on Ipad Air??

The biggest difference I noticed was the FaceTime video seemed less noisy in poor lighting conditions, which covers most FaceTime use as people usually use it indoors with relatively poor light.

Video is still 720p so should not be a big difference. Now taking selfies there is a clear downgrade.

EDIT: If your mostly using the selfies for social media than it wont be much of a difference. The pictures get compressed.
