The "notch" has always been idiotic to me. It's simply lazy engineering and a poor design choice. Any intrusion into an already limited laptop display, whether a notch or a hole punch, is unacceptable.
The notch allowed the menubar to move up, removing the majority of the bezel, since it only intrudes on a part of the menubar that very very very few people have any icons extending to, which freed up limited space laptop display space for normal app use. It increased usuable real estate in the same physical space while maintaining the camera. I legit dont get the criticism, it blends in so well to the menubar that I dont ever even notice.

Apple should be putting a FaceID capable camera into the bezel like PC laptop manufacturers have been doing for YEARS now.
Those cameras dont use the kind of dot projection FaceID uses typically. That's a thicker sensor, compare the depth of a macbook pro screen to an iphone and you'll understand why that's a difficult proposition right now.

If I had to use the MacBook's display as my primary, I probably wouldn't own a MacBook at all. I'm fortunate to have full-sized monitors at all my work locations, though, so the notch doesn't bother me as much. Seriously....who thought this was a good idea?!?
So you dont actually use it often, huh? I advise you to try, in normal use it's not noticeable

I'm steady waiting here for the M4 Studio and you're already making me second guess for the M5? This is Madness! Give me my square box Apple!
FWIW decent chance they'll skip M5 for the studio and wait for M6, it seems to be an "every other" cadence. I'm planning on picking up an M4 Studio personally, think it'll last me a long time :)

All fine and dandy but we are getting to the point that unless you are designing a bridge across the Pacific Ocean and making and editing 8K video about your efforts on the same device, your day to day needs are far exceeded by the power of the device you are using to watch cat videos most of the time
I thought the same, but recently I've started watching cat AND dog videos, so I might need double the processing power.

When Dr. Richard Daystrom installed the M5 (Multi-tronic Processor v5) into Kirk's Enterprise, it ran amok, and destroyed many starships. I fear total anarchy when Apple starts using M6. 🤣

Remember, just because a change isn't mentioned in an early rumor like this doesn't mean that it will not happen. Of course we don't know yet that it will. It's just too early yet to know for sure all that will be included so don't get preemptively disappointed.
I am being critical of MR's lack of imagination and breath of detail.

These features sound intriguing, and I am eagerly waiting for its release, as the M1 Max continues to perform exceptionally well.

i could think of one feature that would benefit me a lot. A keyboard that lights up the language I’m using.
I can’t count how many times I type in the wrong language. I know that there is an icon on the status bar. But a clear label on the button itself would be great.

I suspect that the M6 gen will be the biggest boost they’ve had since M1 and for a lot of people it will be a massive upgrade in a lot of ways. I’m using a M1 mbp with the older design. I definitely plan on buying a 16’ m6 mac, but the m1 mbp is so reliable, I’ll probably continue to use it for years to come.

I started using MacBooks in 2005 and they were never good enough to play video games.

Recently I realized you can install Parsec in your desktop Windows computer at home and give access to your laptop. For $999 you can get a good one with a GeForce RTX 4060.

So I will keep my MacBook Air M2 since it’s fast for everything else, it’s lightweight, battery last the whole day… when I want to play video games, I can connect to my desktop at home or even somewhere else if the internet connection is good.

No reason to buy a MacBook Pro for $4-5k to be able to play games at medium settings.
You pay that much for a Macbook Pro for things well beyond video games and so on though.

It’s justifiable costs if yoy do meaningful things with video, AI and 3D rendering rather than merely consume 3D entertainment.

I guess i will be hanging onto my 16” macbook pro m1 max for a bit longer, when i buy next years oled model in a 14” display.

Don’t get me wrong I love OLED displays having two soon three Sony OLED TV’s. But lets face it OLED has two flaws firstly Burn in & secondly dead pixels which are more common than burn in.

Also given I sit closer to a macbook pro display dead pixels would annoy me more when compared to my TVs which both have a number of dead pixels around the bezels.

I do however welcome no notch, but i wish they can also ditch it from the iPhone. I also like the more thinner profile introduced by the OLED display.

Not sure if i need 5G in a laptop, and the faster processor will be a welcome upgrade from my m1 max.

If you need a new computer you should probably buy a new computer

If you don’t need a new computer then you should probably not buy a new computer

I love my M1 Pro MacBook Pro, I feel no need to replace it. If Apple introduces a MacBook Pro with cellular I’ll buy it immediately, that’s the only thing I can think of that would compel me to upgrade.

What advantage would cellular in a laptop have over using phone as a hotspot?

Uh, it was “in the bezel”, then they just, ya know, extended the screen into some of the bezel 🤷‍♂️

Exactly!

That’s why it’s a weird 15.4:10 aspect ratio rather than 16:10 or 16:9

Someone told me that next year's MacBook Pro will be the "best MacBook Pro Apple has ever made." That alone is a reason to wait.
I've been waiting 40 years now for the ultimate Mac... But each year there are rumours that next year's will be even better, so I keep delaying! :p

Seriously, I switched to an M1 Mac mini in 2021, "to see" whether I could get on with it. Now I was looking at an MBP 14" M4 (Pro) or an Air, but the jump from M3 to M4 makes me want to wait for the M4 Air, before I pull the trigger, to see... But now, the M6... Hmm, wait another 18 months or so? Since the move, I could do with the portability in the flat, plus it would make switching between work and home easier, I just dock the MBA from the office or the MBA/MBP from home, depending on what I am doing. So, I'll probably wait another month and see if the M4 Air is "good enough" or whether I "really need" that 14" liquid dingsbums display, oh, and maybe an M4 Pro...

I love the: "Reasons to wait" logic.

Zero logic I should say.

Carpe diem
It has always been this way. If you listen to this logic in 1984 onwards, you'd still be waiting to buy your first Mac! 🤣

The best time to buy a new computer is when the old one no longer fits the task at hand. I'm looking at my M1 mini and want to replace it with a MacBook Air or Pro... If I listen to the rumours, I'd still probably be looking when the M6 comes out and pondering, whether to wait for the M8!

I'm going to wait and see if the Air M4 drops shortly, otherwise I'll probably go with the MBP M4, the difference between M3 and M4 seems enough to warrant the wait, but waiting another 18 months? I need something portable now. ;)

Thinner? I feel like its a great size right now and not too heavy as well.

I won't mind that as long as they DON'T SACRIFICE PORTS.
Cooling as well. If they can minimize the thermal design without making the fans run more often and louder, fine. But thin for thin's sake? Nope, give me something a little thicker that doesn't throttle early and doesn't sound like a jet taking off...

The problem with the previous generation MacBook Pros aren’t that they were thin, it’s that they were thin and not built to handle being thin.
Now that MacBooks have 24 hour battery life, stay cool almost all of the time and have some of the most efficient silicon on the planet, yeah, they could probably get a little bit thinner.
The 15 inch MacBook Air is .3LB lighter than the *14* inch MacBook Pro, which is in a similar footprint to the old *13* inch MacBooks. There are some huge weight decreases that could happen along with getting thinner, as long as they don’t sacrifice the battery or performance.
Or the ports, although I wouldn’t be shocked to see them drop the HDMI for another thunderbolt port and just keep the SD card slot.
I don’t use the HDMI port but it’s much more popular for class room projectors. There’s no way they should get rid of it. Three USB-C ports is decent. If they want another they should add a fourth and still keep the HDMI and all other ports, and if they can’t they should do nothing.

If all these make it to the 2026 version, it will be a fantastic MacBook Pro. All the features are worth waiting for. The OLED display combined with a lighter laptop will be great.
Hope cellular connectivity is also available. Have been wanting that feature on Macs for a long time now

Genuine question: what are you doing that 32GB feels constrained?

When I specced out my M2 Mac Studio (Ultra) I really wanted to go all out - but I spent quite a bit of time trying to push the various pro apps I used (loads of heavyweight virtual instruments in Logic, Audio and Video processing and encoding, some fairly heavy ML processing, C++ Compilation - although I don't have any huge projects - so that may have made a difference). I could never get it to use much past 24GB. So I went with 64GB instead of 128 ... and when I traded in for an M3 MacBook Pro (Max) I went with 48GB. I've yet to feel constrained. Interested to know what people are doing that needs much more.

Multiple stats models running in parallel. Not even big data, just complicated models. It crashed totally as you can tell by the smiley face re-enactment. Got around it by running less models, but, then I'm not using my CPU to its max capacity, so more RAM would be nice.

I have to disagree about the M5 being a minor upgrade. The M5 ran the entire Starship Enterprise and not only made competent command decisions, but also out maneuvered four, count them four of her sister ships and soundly defeated them in battle. Try that with a PC.
