4. SD card slot= Does iPhone do this? No. Apple doesn't offer SD card slot . They can make more money by selling Adaptor. Why should they give it up?

What kind of logic (from a consumer) is that? You are trying to find a rationale for why Apple skimped on your device. It looks like you care more about Apple than yourself.

...

CNET is retarded

Retina cost too much if they did it the product would be too expensive

NFC??? Really? On a 10 inch item? That is something that is in a device you carry around not a 10 inch tablet

Thunderbolt would be nice but since only macbook pros have it, and nothing else supports it who cares right now

SD card slot, yeah it would be nice can't deny that

4G is a battery killer, the network isn't in place yet, and most carriers don't even have true 4G they just are advertising it as such. No reason for apple to jump on board yet.

NFC - you are probably referring to the rumored NFC-based payment system. It's not the only use for it. For example Samsung Nexus S phones can now use NFC to initiate blutooth pairing (for quick file coping). Thunderbolt might not be a big thing but USB would definitely help.

I saw this article on cnet and to be honest I think its fairly accurate. I believe apple is holding off on some of these to make the iPad 3 more "magical" I can see why apple didn't go the 4G route yet, as well as NFC

seriously?

After a decade with the iPod Apple's strategy isn't clear enough? Incremental updates about once a year, give just enough to make the public need it over the last model, and nothing more. Hell, the original iPhone didn't even come with 3G while every other smartphone on the market above $200 needed it to compete. And Apple was trying to sell there's for $600! And consumers responded well to it! (As well as consumers ever would to a $600 phone).

I don't understand why CNET, a site who's credibility is based on knowing the tech industry, would expect such a gigantic update from Apple.

Are all of those updates possible? Sure! Does it seem like anything Apple would ever do or has ever done when it comes to their mobile products (or even their notebooks/desktops for the matter)? Absolutely not!

Thinking Apple "wiffed" on these updates, that they were at all possible even, is totally ignorant. I expect way more from a site like CNET.

+1 couldn't agree more. Yes base price of $800 would be fine with me, the rest of you can go buy the discounted iPad1 if you disagree. You pay for what you get. Makes no sense for anyone with a current iPad to get the new one. This slow release of technology that's already out is getting old. I will be waiting for iPad 3 just as long as it has a hi-res screen/retina and is 4g. That's not much to ask for.

I feel like a broken record but no other competing tablet has a SD slot. They have microSD slot which can be useful but it's not a replacement for the iPad's card reader.

Yet I see time and time again people and media say something about "so that I can copy pictures from my camera..." No, your camera probably uses a full size SD card (I know some uses microSD) The Xoom, the Galaxy Tab, the Archos, the Nook Color, none of them will read your SD card, only the iPad will with the accessory reader.

Micro SD with Sd adapter packages are dirt cheap and add flexibilty for multiple device usage.

Apparently CNET speaks for only the tech spec geeks who are oblivious to the current conditions of the U.S. economy.

Apple DID it right again by addressing the current consumer market with more than enough upgrades, without raising costs.

The Motorola Xoom, for example. As great I'm sure the tablet is, but how much of the current consumer market is actually ready to pay $800 for the highest specs. IMO, a little too much, too soon. But then again, it's probably the only way the competition can compete. And then again, how long before the Xoom gets passed up by another Android Honeycomb based tablet with even higher specs and another and another and another.......

XOOM is actually already available for less than iPad 2 as reported by Engadget (and others)

At a wholesalers, let's see what the RRP is and what it's available for in Best Buy etc. Considering the UK pricing on the Xoom is identical to the iPad I'd expect it to match up in the US as well.

As for the Cnet stuff I think the main flaws have been well covered. Frankly the fact that's an editorial shocks me as there's no real consideration of viability of their solutions. The Retina Display is the most glaring example, not just in terms of cost but the grunt required to drive such a display and a serious editorial should at least acknowledge that. Instead the link from the editorial for 'it was held back' shows NOTHING of the sort, just that it isn't likely in iPad 2. Gruber says it will eventually get that display but doesn't specify iPad 3 or any reason for it not being in iPad 2.

Actually their editorial standards in that article are terrible in general. The NFC section, for example, links to two articles about NFC being rumoured for the iPad. One is the original Bloomberg rumour and the other is... wait for it... a CNET piece about the Bloomberg rumour.

A list of things the internet gob sh*tes said the iPad should have, I still haven't seen a prototype of the devise that they have made that includes any of these specs.
What is the point of whining because the iPad doesn't have something it never set out to have? its like complaining because it doesn't play X-Box 360 games.

Seriously? If that were true then Apple's products would be falling farther and farther behind in technology each year in comparison to the competition. In truth, they are always "close enough" so that either means the competition is doing the same (as you say, just enough...nothing more) or your conclusion is incorrect.

In fact, since you mention the iPod, what about the iPod touch? That's arguably the best product in its category.

I don't really like Cnet.

5 issues with cnet

1. Some editors are really annoying.
2. Their Prize fight video is garbage. Not fair comparison.
3. Their news is so slow. Compare to macrumors, engadget and other sites. They are the slowest.

4. They make some useless articles like this one right now.
5. And they reviewed galaxy Tab as a good iPad alternative.

So, about those claims...

1. NFC= No other tablets do that right now. Apple never adopts anything so fast. I am not going to hold my tablet in the store to scan.

2. 4G= Battery killer and not enough 4G towers out there including AT&T and Verizon. Also, it will drive the cost higher. Would you like apple to do same thing like Motorola? Take your iPad away for weeks to upgrade 4g that no one will be able to use? 4G will be capped just like 3G.

3. Retina Display= This is coming from editors? Another reason cnet is absolutely a garbage. Battery, cost and production level aren't ready yet.

4. SD card slot= Does iPhone do this? No. Apple doesn't offer SD card slot . They can make more money by selling Adaptor. Why should they give it up?

Exactly, why would someone bring an iPad to a shop and scan, you are basically begging some guy to mug you.

Resurrecting a four month old thread?

Cnet really nailed it. I mean look at how poorly the ipad2 has sold. If only Apple had Cnet advising their product team they might have sold successfully. Instead they sold so poorly the store shelves have been barren of ipad2s since launch.

Oh wait, Apple's sold ipad2s faster than they could make them four four months now, with only the Verizon version coming reliably into stock before now. Those omissions cnet identified really hurt sales....

Cnet never said anything about iPad 2 sales. Not sure where you are getting that.

i don't have a strong desire for any of these things.

a better screen? ok, but i don't want to pay more for it, so cool without it. i am pretty pleased with the one it has.

sd? yeah. i guess. but, not necessary. a combination of cloud services and good data management means i don't actually need that much memory.

thunderbolt? i don't know what i would do with it. it is an unused port on my mbp now...

nfc? no way. i live overseas in a country with lots of nfc. only mildly useful with phones, and not at all useful in a big ipad.
