50% power when no batt in

Is there a way to get around this? Surely the AC draws enough power to run the computer at full speed

My father's mbp has a bad batt and ideally, would just rather have it out but also do not want the performance hit

Your post doesn't really make much sense with the way you worded it. But I think you said something along the lines of "can I run my MBP without the battery". To be honest, I don't know the answer, but I think you should probably leave it in, especially if it's not supposed to be removed by the user. If you meant something different, try to reword it.
