Went to pre-order on Apple's site and ATT changed my deposit from $250 to $500 now in just a years time! Looks like I wont be able to finish pre-ordering online or get one in general now. Very frustrated.

I had a very large deposit also. What convinced me to go ahead and pay it is that I would get it back in a year. Also, of course, I REALLY wanted the iPhone. This was a few months ago, so I "only" have 9 more more months to go before it is refunded. I might just save it to pay for i5, knowing that I won't get the full discount like I did now.

Bad credit or No credit, which one? You can get a credit builder card if you have no credit. Plus things like an AT&T bill will help. That's what I did, and im 21 one now with perfect credit.

How when I can't get a credit card?

Pay all of your bills on time, stay in one residence for an extended amount of time, keep a stable job. You'll probably have to deal with a very high interest credit card or loans if you get any at all...but main thing is to pay all bills on time and if you do have a line of credit, keep it under 50% utilized.

Wow that's extremely steep for a deposit. After I decides to hop my parents plan I was only charged a $150 for a deposit and then when I added a line I payed another $150 deposit. Mind you I had no credit then, so I'm not sure what the deal is with all that. Sorry to hear about your misfortune I can certainly feel your pain concerning the whole not being able to get a credit card. I can't seem to find one for a 21 year old guy with a mid level limit for under 25% interest. Maybe I'm just hard to please.

Ok, so I just completed the pre-order on ATT's site instead of Apple's this time and it didn't prompt with a deposit required, weird? Or will they cancel the order later :(

I would assume, If they do indeed need $500 deposit, they will let you know when you pick up the phone and sign your contract.

I would give them a ring and check in a couple days...

Deposits are only for people with poor -or- no credit at all. All depends on your credit history!

When does the deposit thing come up?

I preordered through AT&T about 4 hours ago as a new customer (I'm with Tmobile now), got confirmation email ($317 due), and nothing about a deposit.

Should anything about a deposit show up immediately upon ordering, or will they contact you later if a deposit is required?

Yeah I'm only 20 so I haven't had any options to build it yet. (For my life situation, maybe not yours so don't flame)

It said on the site, if a deposit is required, the will cancel it, since they can't handle deposits online (wtf?) I seriously wish they could handle them online.

Weird. When I first got a cell phone, with no credit, I tried Verizon. They wanted a $1000 deposit. I went to Cingular, and they wanted nothing.

I'm 18, just finished my freshman year at Michigan State, no deposit. Really glad I have such good credit for my age.

Didn't they pass that law that you can't get a credit card until you're 21 now if you have no previous cards? That's really unfair to be honest.

Exactly. You'd think that I work at Sears I could easily get a Sears credit card.

I had to pay a deposit also and i didn't really start building my credit till last year when i was 29. I paid for most things with cash. Because that's what my grandparents did and they didn't have any type of debt at all. You couldn't even get my Grandparents to touch a credit card

So i would recommened if you can pay the deposit you get it back in a year. And just get a starter/Secured credit card when your able to. Charge a little bit and pay it off and that will build for you.

But when you do get credit don't use it too much. Because that's once reason why this country has dragged the world into a recession.

I would never pay a deposit for a phone, especially $500. But my credit score is 800+ anyway, you kids need to realize that in today's world credit is waayyyyy too important!

When I came to the US ten years ago, the deposit for AT&T was $1000 and so was Verizon's. Sprint took me for $125 deposit and I am still grateful for that. :p
