So Dr Q., care to tell us what songs you bought?
I picked one in particular just in case I won, because it would have made such a good story: [playlistId=65030&selectedItemId=65026]Celebrate[/playlistId]. And I bought this one because it suited the final hours of the contest: [playlistId=132692&selectedItemId=132690]Don't Let It End[/playlistId].

Now I'm going to go cry in my pillow and wallow in self pity. Oh, how could I have lost!?!? What makes Amy Greer more deserving than the rest of us? Sob, sob. :(

Did anybody notice that the 497,400,000th song was named [playlistId=23488598&selectedItemId=23488612]Rumors[/playlistId]? I didn't know Apple sold "rumors". Perhaps MacRumors should charge for all of the rumors too! :D

Less than a year I'll bet

Yea probably, at the rate that it's growing.

I wonder what they will do for the 1 billionth song. Unlimited Apple products for life :D :p

I had at least three songs downloaded at 14:44, but then, download rates were in the thousands per minute.

I got two at 14:44. Still, even if they had 150 songs per second, that is 9000 songs. By buying two songs in that minute, I had a one in 4500 chance of winning. Those chances are pretty good actually.

What bothers me is I purchased about eight songs after the 500,000,000 mark. :( The counter really got off towards the end.

Yea, I purchased a whole other album after the 500. Not that I didn't want the album anyway though.

Hmm, the 480,300,000 song was sold to someone in Pineville, NC and the 480,800,000 song was sold to someone in Corneilus, NC....both are suburbs of Charlotte and both are in Mecklenburg County

Now what were the odds of that?

The nearest person to me lived in Sydenham, which is only a few miles down the road - but by far the most embarassing thing when looking at UK winners was that the highest two brits both won with Charlotte Church!

Do free song downloads count towards the 500 million total?

cuz I always get an email invoice after downloading one of their free songs.

I've never been clear on that for the free Single-of-the-Week iTunes we get each week. However, I suspect that they are a tiny fraction of the tunes purchased, so it doesn't make much difference, except to satisfy our insatiable curiosity.

I'd expect that the free tunes from the Pepsi promotion and the tunes sponsored by Volvo and The Times U.K. are counted since somebody (the sponsor) paid for those tunes even if we got them free.

No, they don't. It said in the rules that no free songs counted toward the 500.

why doesn't apple keep on telling us how many songs have been downloaded? it must be at least 502 million by now....they could start the next milestone event. their homepage is boring. it just reminds me of how much money i have spent and how much i wish i could have won that prize...i can't wait till and ibook takes up that page

I purchased a tune when the counter was around 5,000 short of the 500m even though other had already posted in this forum that it had hit 500m 5mins. earlier, how's that?
I'm still waiting for my email invoice/reciept to see exactly what time I was recorded and to see what my invoice number is. I wish there was a way to compare invoice numbers with whoever won and others who missed the same time so I could see a) how close I got and b) get an idea of how many songs were purchased that minute.

Do you know what the exact words were? Depending on how they defined "free", tunes sponsored by companies like Pepsi might or might not have been counted. In those cases, consumers got them free but Apple got paid for them.

I dont remember exactly what they said but I think they just meant songs that Apple is giving away like the Free Tune of the Week.
