Any recommendations on how to manage with 512GB storage? My late 2016 MBP I upgraded to 512Gb as 256GB wasn’t enough and occasionally I ran into issues with 512GB when doing things like complete local iPhone backups etc.

I can get a better deal on the 512GB 14” MBP with stock available now but I keep MBP’s for around 5 years and I have 2TB iCloud storage and don’t want to worry about storage if there’s a better way to manage having 512GB or bite the bullet and go 1TB.

I got absolute base as I was trading in my old i7 MBP and picking up at the Apple Store, they only had the base 512GB 16GB 16" M1 Pro available. My last one was 512 and I didn't use more than 256GB. docs don't take up much space and when I do LR/PS I save my RAWs and such onto a 1TB T7

I got the 1 TB (all of my other systems have 500) as I wanted it quickly and was trying to order that crazy day when they launched. I decided to go with 1 TB even though 500 GB would be enough as I use a large NAS. Do I need 1 TB? No. Is it handy, probably if I want to play with VMs. You could also get a 500 GB SD card if you need space for stuff where performance isn't an issue. I generally hate carrying around an external drive. Thumb drives and SD cards are okay though.

Now these machines have a bit of extra convenience w/ an SD card reader, you may want to offload media to those.

That said, if you have a working amount of data (applications/VMs) that you think might exceed 350 gigs, I'd recommend going to a terabyte. You generally don't want to exceed 70% of the SSD capacity for speed and wear leveling concerns.
