Not worth what Apple is charging... and you only "need" it if you're doing video editing, etc.

Plus, I rather save the money towards a future SSD upgrade.

Exactly this, keeping my 5400 rpm and saving up for an SSD. Rather put the money into a massive increase in performance as oppose to a slight increase.

Yes there is a noticeable differenct going to 7200 from 5400 and is worth the upgrade.
Yes, going to SSD is a much greater leap. But if it is not in your budget to go to SSD, going to 7200 is worth it absolutely.

Is it possible to upgrade your HD to 7200RPM later? Maybe even cheaper than the $90 Apple charges?

Get a 7200 RPM 750GB WD scorpio black drive.
In case there is any possiblity that you may get an SSD in the future, don't be tempted by the 1TB drive, as it is not 9.5 mm and will not fit in the optibay drive.

I recently did the 7200 rpm leap myself from the stock Apple 250GB (5400 rpm)

Bought a 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Black which has made a major boost in performance on my late 2010 13" MBP. The HDD upgrade along with upgrading to 8GB of RAM has made this into my GarageBand monster. :D

How big is the performance difference?

And is the 750 gb Western Digital Scorpio Black more noisy then the stock 5400 rpm drive?

How is the effect on the battery life btw? :)

Surprisingly, the power draw from the WD is lower than the Apple installed HDD. No noise at all from it and finally got all my apps reinstalled.

One other thing I noticed before I upgraded, the stock drive only would negotiate a 1.5gb connection to the SATA host controller. The new drive pushes the full 3gb that my MBP allows.

No heat issues either :D

One last note. With over 1700 photos in iPhoto '11 (most over 10MP), the app launches from a cold start ready to work in four seconds (with iTunes syncing to my Apple TV and Firefox running).

did a 32bit geekbench last night and was in the 3700 range.

I just ordered this same drive and I have also upgraded to 8gb of RAM. Mine should arrive Wed.
