First off, this site has been GREAT for me so far. Fast responses to my newbie questions hehe, and everyone was very polite!

Curious, how many servers does this puppy run on? I think I read it does 5m pageviews per month! wow!

Must be quad core servers huh? haha

5 servers.

2 for forums
1 for database
1 for www.macrumors.com (front page + articles)
1 for other (attachments, guides, other)

A combination of quad and 8 core.

37 million page views the past month.

We do cheat a little and move some stuff (images) off to a content delivery network on busy days like keynotes and iphone launches.

You have a server just for the front page? How can you single out a page to a server??

Why not cache it somehow, or build a batch script to simply write out a .html file and server it as a static file?

Congrats man, 37 million page views...WOW!

This is your fulltime job then right? Although I don't see that many ads on it, why not put more adsense ads like below the 1st post...I don't mind those much!

sorry... meant front page + articles. basically the static non-forum content. everything hosted on www.macrumors.com (vs forums.macrumors.com)

Ads are below the first post, but only for non-logged in people.

yep, I'm fulltime now. :)

Talk about a dream job!

You must get Mac gear etc. for free for reviews right?

How old is this site anyways?

actually, no. we don't do reviews, so I don't get free hardware. :)

It's 8 years old now. Started in 2000.

37 million? That's the population of Sudan each month. Impressive.

that's total page views, not unique visitors....hehe.

The forum spy page i'm sure is pretty resource intensive, since it keeps polling for new posts (but a cool feature that's for sure)

does it run on windows servers? it crashed the other day and im pretty sure it was a windows webserver error page. :p

Why don't you start doing reviews. Would be interesting to get some reviews of the latest mac products from Apple and 3rd parties. Rare do i ever find reviews on 3rd party Apple hardware and Software.

reviews take a lot of work to do right. Not sure if the audience is particularly interested in reviews either.

How about this?

I don't think reviews would be that helpful for this sight, it is not really the purpose, I don't think. And yes, they would generate MASSIVE disscussions, most of which I am guessing would descend into nasty nasty fights.

Although free gear I'm guessing is something that arn would not be opposed to :D

I am glad MR doesn't do reviews.
Other furms I frequent do reviews and the write ups always seem to have hidden message to them. Meaning the reviewer really wants to express their opinion but falls short in fear of loosing business or future incentives.

One great example recently is ilounge. Their review of the new 3rd gen shuffle was spot on and Aple punished them.
