Hi,

I just noticed this small white diagonal line (like a forward slash) on my MBP screen this afternoon. I have attached a picture of the screen. It is hard to see on the photo, but it is towards the right about half-way down.

What is this line??

i think i can see it.. is it still white on a black background?

Interesting, as it no longer is white on a black background. In fact, I cannot see that "line" on a black background...

Just to make sure... turn your mac off or put it to sleep for about an hour or 2!
Switch on and observe carefully! Is it instantaneous or occurs with time?

I turned it off overnight, and this morning when I turned it back on, the white line appeared instantly.

Here's another picture of this "phenomenon..."

Hmmm..LED.. no heating issues I guess <scratching head>

You need to get it replaced! What do you actually feel about it? Is it a scratch (Im regarding the fact that it isnt there when the screen is off as obvious) or its a problem with the screen?

Try peeking at it closely... can you actually make out certain little square dots (pixels)?

Also, can your screen form an image behind the 'scratch'? Pull a photo with deep red or orange color under that!

P.S.: by 'time' I mean something as little as 5 seconds!

It is not a scratch as when I look at it closely, I does originate from inside the display (it's not on the surface, but is deeper).

When I pull up a black background, I cannot see this line anymore. It is more prominent on white, grey, and lighter colored backgrounds. I can still see the line on a deep red/orange background, although again it is not as bright as on a white/grey background.

Thanks for your help.

If it vanishes on colors (ie: the screen can reproduce the colors in the region) its not a screen defect! But then again, there are some 'sticky pixels' which reproduce only one shade of color and the rest appear as a dented shade.

I strongly recommend you to get it replaced. If the genius is a foolish kind of guy, he/she'll insist its fine but you must be stern and demand a replacement or a repair... whats the warranty coverage?

I bought it new in April, so I should be good. I do not need AppleCare, do I?

Thanks again!

I brought it to the Apple Store yesterday, and the Genius told me without hesitation that it would need to be repaired.

Now I get to use a Dell laptop in the meantime... :(

I have the exact same problem on the bottom right-hand corner of my MBP SR.
I figured it was because someone touched my screen hence my 'touch and i jab you with my pen' policy. Did the genius repair under applecare? It's only small but it's really f**ing annoying!

Hi,

I made an appointment with a Genius at my local Apple Store. When I powered it on, the Genius noticed the "defect" right away. He said that he had seen similar occurences happen, and that the screen would need to be repaired. He checked to see if the store carried the part, but it didn't. He informed me that the laptop would have to be shipped to the repair station. The turn-around should be between 5-7 days.

The problem description on my work order states "LCD is showing .25" line of bright pixels..."

I will post back here when I get it back.

Here is the latest update.

This morning, I checked the status of the repair, and it said to call AppleCare as more information was needed. I called, and the rep told me that the depot had determined that this line of bright pixels was not caused by a defect in the LCD, but rather by some sort of external pressure at some point in time.

I informed the rep that the laptop was seating on the table for days, and one day when I turned it back on from "sleep," the line instantly appeared. He said he understood my dilemma, but unfortunately, the depot will do any repairs unless I pay for them ($1200).

Of course, I said no to the repairs. I am extremely disappointed by this outcome. There is no way that "excessive pressure" was ever exerted in this location at any point in time. It appears that I will have to live with this, unless someone can suggest another alternative.

:(

You mean to tell me those dicks sent your computer off and now are going to charge you...Oh boy Im glad this didnt happen to me!

Fight for a replacement. Apple has been dumping crap lcd's in the MBP line for awhile now it seems. I am on my fourth replacement since buying my MBP July of '07. I now finally have a working and pixel perfect monitor.
