What would I really gain by upgrading the speed of the hard drive on the MBP? I didn't want to give up FireWire, so didn't go for the Macbook - but should I get the faster drive?

I'm a non-pro user - I use Photoshop Elements and iPhoto - not a big gamer.

Should I upgrade?

I think you would see a small increase. But i would only do it if you want more capacity.

Battery life might go down a very small amount tho.

If you have the money, I would definitely recommend it. Although you might not notice any increase in performance during regular use, you will notice the different if you ever need to transfer alot of files or if you're using harddrive intensive applications. I believe the cost of upgrading to 7200rpm hdd is minimal...

But... if you can't afford the upgrade, you can always upgrade it later. The new MBP's HDD are very easy to upgrade.

I just purchased the new MBP and got the 7200rpm.
