As some of you know, in Maryland now we have 5 bars. Even in the house, in the basement. It's all cool and dandy but there is no connection?

-I can't open a web page
-intetworktest test fails, and says " Network error"
-If I can get it work, I get 80kps????
-Of course no radio stations, I can't even update stocks, weather.

all this under 5 bars of 3G....

At&t fked it up again. Fixed reception but fked data...

Go figure...

Anybody else in the area having the same problems?

I have been having the same problem over the last two days in Wilmington, DE and Baltimore. I think the 3G network is getting saturated.

I have found that turning airplane mode on and off, or turning the 3G radio on and off will get the connection running again, at least for a bit.

Hopefully they are building out their network and things will get better. Maybe we will start hearing about the "iphone effect"...

i have been having the same issue, but am in the NOVA/DC area.

Two nights ago in Chinatown, no dice with surfing a page using 3G last night in Dupont no dice again surfing a page using 3G, and this is with full 5 3G bars.

Kicker though if I enable EDGE, I am able to surf the pages. IDK whats goin on. This is a replacement iPhone.

Also, this is also a PITA if I am in the car... I will have full 5 3G bars but can't surf but agian if I enable EDGE I can get it to work.

If i am adventerous, if I enable edge and disable edge I can get 3G to work...

Turn on /off airplane fixes for about 30sec, 1m then loses connection again.
That's why first I thought it could be my phone (phone related problem)...
but I guess not.
Come on At&t, enough already..get it right for once... We used to have bad reception but at least we had data connection. Now we have 5 bars, but no connection....:mad::mad:

I am frustrated about the data, but glad it is not just me, I was worried I had a bum phone too.

I think people are just hitting the network too hard. A non-academic poll of the people I know around here with iphones are experiencing the same thing. I was worried yesterday when this was not appearing on the forums anywhere.

I guess this is great for apple/bad for AT&T. I sure hope they can build out. I imagine the streaming apps getting shut down in one way or another if the problems get worse.

Ask ATT rep to change SIM card

I had the same issue for the first 12 hours after i purchased my iphone on August 13. Nothing worked and when it worked it was slower then dial up modem.

I spent some time messing with it, but at some point I wondered to the ATT store. Rep was trying to help me and I just noticed after he re-inserted my SIM card internet was completely dead. I asked him to replace the sim card after a little bit of doubt from his side he did it. It woks fine since. My old sim card had some signs of usage. You could check your sim card, just pull it out and take a look at the contact surface. If there are distinct groves/scratches on it - you may have the same issue. You should see faint contact tracks only.

It almost looks like they are using some sim cards for testing during production and then just leave them at some point in the phone. I just managed to get one of those freaky one from millions.

I am having the exact same issue here in Easton, PA... Been happening for the past few days! Full 3G bars but no data speeds! When I do get data to go through it is measuring about 7-12 KBs on testmyiphone... I had no problems with 3G before this... Still trying to figure out what is going on!!

I am in PA too and it is fast...

I am getting consistently 800-1500kbs for the last 2 days in Valley Forge, PA. Check your sim card.

does that not have all the hallmarks of hardware problems?

anyone try a different handset?? (nokia,moto..etc.?)

I don't think it is the SIM card because mine was brand new with this phone (only 2 weeks old)... I have never taken it out! I will check it out though, but I think it is something with AT&T network!!

The rep broke the seal from the iPhone box in my presense

I was expecting to have a brand spanking new sim card in my iPhone when I purchased it 2 days ago, but I discovered later by incident the sim card in it was not new. I have no idea how this beaten up sim card ended up in a new iPhone. It just never hurt to check it condition and replacing sim card is a lot less trouble than replacing the iPhone. I was ready to return iPhone and I glad I stopped by ATT store and gently insisted on sim card replacement. After all, my iPhone was not at fault. Also, I do not think it was network. It would be too freaky to assume the network was fixed at the same time my new sim card was activated. Later, I did a lot of testing (turning on/off, disable/enable 3G and etc.) to verify it is working consistently. Also I was checking on store demos when I was having troubles with mine and they worked fine, only my iPhone was flaking out. It beats demo models in store in speed now. Actually store ones I tried was having some trouble with internet (with errors I did not see on mine). I rebooted 2 units and they sort of came alive, so I could run the tests.

Another thing, only 3G was not working. EDGE was working fine and actually was way faster then 3G.

Same crap is happening to me in CT. The airplane mode on/off does help but later it happens again. I have a brand new sim card too. AT&T is definitely fixing there network.:(

no 3g in nyc for two days

any other new yorkers running into this? i have had no problems with 3g until yesterday. i was in manhattan yesterday and all day today and couldn't connect at all. i noticed five people on the subway in manhattan with cell phones and four of them were iphones. now i'm back in brooklyn and 3g is fine.

i think the 3g network is overwhelmed.

called AT&T while in Manhattan

I couldn't get anything - no data, no 3G, even Edge was creeping along. Just called the 611 number and the woman finally found 'severely degraded service' alert. I just put the phone away and when I went back to Brooklyn it was fine.

So there was a serious problem, but hopefully not chronic.

Store demos are invaluable troubleshooting tool

Just a suggestion. It is easy to check your phone by comparing with demo units. It would clear some doubts in respect to your iPhone.

Checked the SIM card and everything looks fine... I actually tried the "Airplane" mode thing and it worked! I just switched on airplane mode for a few seconds and now I have 3G speeds back around 1200 Kbps / 149 kB/s! I was actually getting faster earlier in the week... something is definitely going on with the network! I also had no issue with Edge just 3G data only... calls on 3G went through just fine!

3G voice quality.

A bit off the topic. This is my fist 3G phone. I remember calling my friend with 1gen iPhone and voice quality was horrible. I also have Verizon phones and I never had so severe quality issues with it. I really liked iPhone voice quality on 3G.
Did anyone noticed the same?

good. i'm not going crazy.
i guess "severely degraded" = totally busted. but, yeah, here's hoping it isn't because everyone and their poodle has one in the city -- because there's nothing much to be done about that!

Good news!

Airplane mode will disable the radio, so will the sim card when removed. I had some success with temporary disabling 3G. It helps some times to force the phone to signup with the network.

really good suggestion and so dumb of me not to think of it when i was right next to the 14th st. apple store. i'll test tomorrow though, as i should be back in the neighborhood.

I agree it stinks... Hopefully they fix it soon! Luckily, turning airplane mode on/off fixed me for now... So far no issues since I did that! But I still have slower 3G than normal!

It's back again. Getting 350-700kbps....

For the love of god, you people in MD and surrounding areas should stop browsing porn on your phones. You're killing me here, can't listen to my radio stations...

I am at a not-very-exciting dinner so I am browsing whenever the GF is not looking... My 3G service appears to be completely hosed for browsing, coming back with errors, etc. This is definitely a problem.

My blackberry was humming along so I switched to EDGE which is at least working. I have a feeling the coming weeks will be painful. As far as I can tell there is still no official mention of this. Things will get interesting if it starts knocking off enterprise users...

EDIT: I am getting e-mail out of order, and some IMAP commands are not being sent. I would say we are going downhill...

It has been really fast for me the last three weeks (since 3G finally made it to my area -- 25 miles north of NYC) but after I read the first post in this thread and ever since, my 3G has been extremely slow. The speed test i always use is reporting around 52 kbps, where it had been steady at 700-900 kbps for the past three weeks.

Don't really know why it's such a huge dip.
