I have been having the same problem over the last two days in Wilmington, DE and Baltimore. I think the 3G network is getting saturated.

I have found that turning airplane mode on and off, or turning the 3G radio on and off will get the connection running again, at least for a bit.

Hopefully they are building out their network and things will get better. Maybe we will start hearing about the "iphone effect"...

I think Apple admitted it had something to do with the firmware. The iPhone will avoid the 3G network if it's too saturated, but I guess with the explosion of iPhones, you're going to be lucky to find a 3G network that isn't full of iPhones. I'm pretty sure Apple is working on a fix by way of a firmware upgrade - at least I think I read that somewhere.

We're back to normal. Over 1MB.... I hope stays that way....

I'm getting like 19-21kbps on 3 bars of 3G in Cambridge/Boston--was just at Logan Airport this morning and same thing with 5 bars..... not sure what is going on. It was better in SF though, despite a seemingly patchy network (was there over the weekend). At least Edge is pretty solid everywhere.

Yeah I'm in Boston too and the last few days I've been getting a ton of incredibly slow loading times that usually lead to "server not responding" this is with full 3-5 bars of 3G service. Edge of course works, but what the ****. I'm also getting a lot of "Can't send message on outgoing server". This is lame. Lame Lame Lame.

I was in on the mall yesterday and noticed lack of 3G internet. Had 5 bars....
Today in Silver Spring, same thing.

i have been having the same issue, but am in the NOVA/DC area.

Two nights ago in Chinatown, no dice with surfing a page using 3G last night in Dupont no dice again surfing a page using 3G, and this is with full 5 3G bars.

Kicker though if I enable EDGE, I am able to surf the pages. IDK whats goin on. This is a replacement iPhone.

Also, this is also a PITA if I am in the car... I will have full 5 3G bars but can't surf but agian if I enable EDGE I can get it to work.

If i am adventerous, if I enable edge and disable edge I can get 3G to work...

Funny, I borrowed a Nokia today and apparently in my house I am in a 3G area!! Never got the 3G icon at anypoint with my iPhone!

Same, the 3g in boston has been really sluggish

Same thing in the east part of Tampa, FL yesterday. I was in this area, which I am not in frequently, and saw I had 5 bars of 3G, which I don't see all that often. I thought WOOT! internet will be fast! Then nothing. Webpages pretty much would not load, slower than edge. IMs from the AIM app would not go through either. Everything just sat there, processing.

Then I switched over to edge to see how that was, and bam! everything worked again, webpages loaded, IMs, was back to normal. I attributed it to maybe the 3G network being overloaded in that particular area (lot of houses and shopping centers in that area), but maybe it's some kind of system wide thing that occurred.

When in NYC I will have 5 bars and 3G, yet it won't load anything. This is very frustrating, I know the phone isn't perfect, but can I atleast be able to use the 3G speed to it's potential? Is it soo much to ask? I don't care about the lacking features, I just want my stability back and good network speed.

kinda sad my edge speeds are beating out my 3g speeds right now =\

Agreed, I was in Woodbridge Mall in NJ this afternoon and I had 3-4 bars w/ 3G and it took forever to say the least. Mostly it didn't even show the web pages I was looking for. I tried using my GF's previous generation phone on edge and it was how 3G is supposed to be.

How do you manually switch between 3G and edge?

How can a sim card affect the quality of service?

EDIT: I figured out how to turn 3G off

So is it just me or does this seem like a major problem!!

We've heard of the dropped calls on 3G, but, no data service when you are in good 3G areas? Is this unreported? Related to the voice problem?

I'm not sure about this but it would seem that the 3G networks are overwhelmed, 3G is all well and good on old smartphones, but with the huge amounts of data iPhone users consume, the network can't handle it. If this is true, is there a quick fix around the corner, or is this likely to be a problem for months?

Could it possibly be a software problem?

It really is the height of hypocrisy that the main feature of the new iPhone is 3G, but, the network excludes many (not really Apple's problem) and wasn't developed enough to handle the influx of new users.

I'm sorry for the rant, but when I'm finally in a good 3G area and I try to use my ***** phone, I should be able to USE MY ***** phone. This whole problem I might add is a recent development, probably the last week or so. EPIC fail if this continues.

I've been having the same problem in Virginia since Friday, 3-5 bars and no Internet on 3g. Switching to EDGE seems to work, but 3g is intermittent.
