In the Depths of the SLC!
Ladies and Gentlemen, we now have a Jailbreak! This came up a few hours ago and after reading most all of the pages, you can see that it indeed does work!

1. RESTORE to 2.1, don't upgrade, it could mess the process up...

2. Download the link below (Its QuickPwn, with jfb392's bundles)

http://rapidshare.com/files/14455077...wnRC3.zip.html

(All Credit goes to jfb392 for the bundle)

3. Once downloaded, extract the .zip files with a Archiver, you can use any. If you dont have one, search for WinRAR, and install it.

*. Before you do anything to the actual iPod, and if its jailbroken, go to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework. Make a copy of the MobileInstallation file in there, on your desktop or something

4. Run QuickPwn. Pick iPod Touch. Then when it asks you to browse for the IPSW (iPod Software) file, pick the 2.1 Firmware file, and then go next.

5. Go through the steps in the Terminal. It sounds hard, but the steps are really really easy.

6. Once the QuickPwn Terminal process is done, the Pineapple, and then Spinning wheel should be up for a while, and it should reboot... dont worry its fine.

7. Now that the iPod is back to the home screen, CYDIA and INSTALLER ARENT THERE!!! OMG!!! Good! That how it should be.

8. If you didnt get the MobileInstallation from before, you have to go googling for it, i am not going to post it...

9. Now you have to download Total Commande, or any other file browser that works with the iPod through USB... Here a link of Total Commander, and the t-pot plugin for Total Commander to let you browse around the iPod. Installation for the plugin is in the second link.

http://code.google.com/p/t-pot/

http://www.ghisler.com/download.htm

11. Now on Total Commander or whatever you have, connect to the iPod and go to /System/Library/PrivateFrameWorks/MobileInstallation.framework

12. Now that your in there, make a backup of the MobileInstallation thats in your 2.1 iPod now somewhere where you can get to later, and after you get that done, get the MobileInstallation from 2.0.1 and drag it to the iPod and overwrite.

FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE WRITE PROTECTION!

In Total Commander, you have to drag the file from one side to another in Total Commander. So on the left, navigate to the spot where you have your MobileInstallation in, and on the left, navigate to the spot where it goes.

13. Now REBOOT your iPod... and Turn it back on...

14. Hurrah! You know have Cydia and Installer on there...

does this work if i am already on 2.1?

today something REALLY weird happened. i was trying to jailbreak to 2.01 from 1.1.4 but it kept failling. i then quit out and restored using itunes 8.0, and it said restore and update, so i clicked that, and it gave me official firmware 2.1 for free. i didnt even have a credit card on file. i didnt have 2.0 previously either. im guessing i when the jailbreak process failed the first time, it already tricked the ipod into thinking it was 2.01 or something.

Yes, you have to have it in 2.1 for it to work. This is like, a half jailbreak in a sense. Third party apps do work but for some reason Cydia isn't showing up. This isn't the official DEV TEAM'S jailbreak but it is as close as we can get for about a week.

Lots of members on the other forum have tried and it does work. You can SSH into the ipod and install apps and themes and stuff.

Good luck!

I wasn't going to try this out, but I might as well power up my Windows Machine and give it a try! I will get on it bright and early tomorrow morning, since I don't need it at work, I should be ok!

Here is another link, hopefully this one works better!

EDIT - The original creator has now made a method that doesn't force you to use Totalcommandor (of course, after I already did all that). Here is a quote -

many ppl said it doesnt work (among them, myself lol).
i proud to present my solution which base on this guide.
no need to update files, just restore and jb
and the best thing? itunes 8 love it!
enjoy guys...

Scratch that as well! The DEV TEAM has released the official 2.1 Jailbreak - http://www.quickpwn.com/ - Enjoy!

And a note to that, it was never mentioned as official. If you can see the other threads, there is one that says "OFFICIALLY RELEASED" on the DEV blog site.

This is the method I used, that is why I posted it.

Well if you noticed, this thread came out about a day and a half ahead of the Mac release (can't change thread names here). I was going to start a new thread but decided against it since no one paid any mind to my "Official" thread tracking the progress of the jailbreak.

They released QuickPwn 1.1 for Mac last night and it will hack your 2.1 iPod Touch, it is not compatible with 2nd Gens so keep that in mind.
