Help my sister find the "right" laptop for her.

My sister is looking to buy her own laptop cuz she's sick of waiting for the other family members to get off the comp. She doesn't want a Mac cuz she doesn't like the UI soooo that leaves her with a PC.🙄

She's looking for a basic laptop so she can surf the web, use iTunes and such. Here's the kicker: She doesn't want to spend more than US$700 (before taxes).🙄 What PC laptop can she get for US$700 that is also reliable?

I think anything made by HP will be alright... I just don't like to mess with PC laptops. That's why I use Macs. If I wanted a reliable PC I'd build my own. It just seems to risky to get a PC laptop as they always seem to fail. Try talking her into an older macbook and installing windows on it.

Definitely this. You can spec out a 14" widescreen SL400 for less than $700 easily. I've told numerous people this before--if I absolutely had to go out and buy a PC laptop for personal use, it would absolutely, positively be a Lenovo. They make some awesome (and incredibly well built) laptops.

EDIT: I just spec'd out a nice SL400 for $680. Includes 14.1" widescreen display, 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, Vista Home Premium, 80GB hard drive, and DVD burner. Dang, that's tempting. This would make a great Hackintosh candidate.

Yes Dell consumer laptops (the inspirons) suck. But buy an Inspiron and a Latitude and stick them next to each other, other than the Dell sticker they are like day and night.

I'd go with a HP....i found a HP with 3GB 2.0GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo, a 320GB HDD, a webcam, 15.4" scrn for 684.99 or something along that price range..

Ugh. We deploy Dell business class laptops across our infrastructure to mobile users. They've got progessively better, but I'm still not the biggest fans. The D610s were garbage, but the D620s/D630s were huge improvements, but still not something I'd own.

Lenovos FTW all day long.
