5870 in '09 Mac Pro?

Will the 5870 work with the '09 pros? I would certainly buy a used 09' then since it's only a minor speed bump and nothing else.

It is unlikely that anyone knows at this point, since the upgrade kit hasn't been posted to the Apple store yet. But I am hoping it will work on my Early 2008 model.

'09 Mac Pros should be able to use the HD5870.... unless Apple decides not to support it officially, then we'd have to resort to flashing.

technically the 4870 wasn't "officially supported" by apple for use in 1,1 and 2,1 mac pros, but the official apple version still worked because ATI left efi32 code in the ROM.

that being said, we didn't NEED to flash peecee 4870s, it was just cheaper and more fun, since we wouldn't have gotten support from apple anyway.

since the logic boards from the 2009 and 2010 are so similar, we'd probably be able to use either method for the 5870.

Actually, I have reason to believe that the 2009 and 2010 logic boards are IDENTICAL, save for newer EFI firmware that allows the new CPUs to work.

So I think it's reasonable to assume that the 5770/5870 cards will work in 2009 (and perhaps even 2008 because they're also on EFI-64) Mac Pros just fine.
