Apple has seeded a new version of Snow Leopard (Build 10A190) to developers this morning. Last night they had emailed ADC members that a preview build of Snow Leopard was made available to them, but the download links were not live until this morning.

Snow Leopard is the codename for the next major revision of Mac OS X. Apple has said that they would be focusing on quality and performance in Snow Leopard. In particular, Apple has made it clear that there will be efforts to improve support for multi-core processors and GPU processing. These improvements will help developers more efficiently use these capabilities that already ship in Macs.

Actually I can't wait for the Mac Pro get boosted!
Any idea about when it will happen?

Can't imagine what it'd be able to do with multiple CPUs and multiple GPUs (knowing that it already is so powerful)!

Thanks for the update.

Looking forward to seeing what developers find after having some time to dig into it. The 8gb support question is obviously going to be on many people's mind (for both generation MBP), as well as possible enabling on the fly switching of GPUs on the fly.

Thanks for the responses, highly appreciated.

I have never been so excited about a OS upgrade before. I'm glad apple is working on stability and speed, especially making use of multi-cores and GPUs.

Just bought 8 iMacs

Just bought 8 iMacs for my office. Still running 6 power pc Macs...

Apples sales should be good at the arrival of Snow Leopard as it will leave all the power pc Macs in the past. Like it or not, I will be spending more of my hard earned money with Apple next year... :(

Your powerpc macs will basically still function the same.

Most of the improvements are for dual cores and GPU equipped machines.

Microsoft office will still run just fine.

why don't we get more excited about software

since software is the major differentiation between apple and pc why do we go crazy over a new case but sit here and nod between our sips of coffee over software news

I think another valid question is whether it will support the Core Solo chip. Most likely, but I would bet that most of the enhancements to speed won't do much good for that chip, as it (obviously) only has one core. However, I'm sure Apple will just say "Intel Macs," lest they "confuse" people about whether they are supported or not.

I think the big reason is that we can't all download it and start complaining.
With case leaks, there's actually something to complain about.

x86_64 only?

Is Mac OS X 10.6 going to be 64-bit-only? Eliminating PPC code is a no-brainer, but what about the x86 code? If we are just talking about the Mac then I would think the 32-bit code would also get removed, but the iPhone and iPod touch use the "same" OS X code so maybe not. Then again, Apple could develop 32-bit code solely for the iPhone/iPod touch and 64-bit code for the Mac so Mac OS X 10.6 and on will be 64-bit "clean".

Sweet cant wait, just a question couldnt somebody get the 500 dollar developer kit and get snow leopard releases without even developing lol.

Shot in the dark, but does anyone have a good guesstimate when 10.6 will be released?

“About a year” from WWDC this year (which was in June).

There were rumours before Apple officially announced Snow Leopard that the release would be much sooner — early 2009, as soon as January.

Apple is unlikely to announce their ship date following their slightly embarrassing public back track on the Leopard ship date. That's not to say they don't have a date — I suspect, as usual, Apple are working to an ambitious schedule.

I agree.

I think it is far more exciting. Software is not like a piece of hardware, it's never complete and it is constantly evolving. But software is intangible and a lot harder to talk about. Hence why I think the threads are shorter.

The other factor is: what is there to talk about? We don't really know many real facts and those who do can't talk about it anyway. Whilst Apple may have softened their line on product leaks, it appears their legendary secrecy is as strong as it even was with software.

So if Steve Jobs stands on stage at MacWorld and announces Snow Leopard will be shipping on January 24, 2009 then I won't be too surprised.
