It may well be in a few universities. If you go to the Apple Education Store, as well as the link for individuals, there is a link that says "This may only be accessed through your institution's network". Click on that when you are on a computer at your university (if they are participating), and there is a higher discount than a standard education one. I haven't worked out the percentage, but must be around 20ish percent off.

I've been checking ours loads recently on campus (Nottingham Uni) and from the calculations I've done it looks like the average discount given by the standard student discount is approximately 8.5% (not including iPods) while the University discount throught the special site was around 14-15%. I was doing some averages last night on this matter as it happens and I'd factored in the 12" ibook, 15" MacBook Pros, the iMacs, Powermac Basic and Quad and the 30" Cinema Display. Which Uni gives you 24% off?!!

Edit: Oh btw, on the topic of Dixons and PC World ripping people off I'll just wanted to add that I bought my Apple Keyboard from PC World in Brighton a few months ago for a fiver less than from Apple. So apparently these stores' stupidity sometimes works in our favour.

I hate Dixons so much. I used to work for Sevenoaks Sound and Vision, fanstastic company, but the horror stories I used to get because customers came to us with advice from Dixons was scary to say the least.

Dixons extended wanrranty is a joke. The ammount of products that have a one year warranty at Dixons, they offer an extra two years for more £££'s, if you go anywhere else, you would find that they had a 3 year warranty because the shops are given a 3 year guarantee from the manufacturer. All audio companies that are under the AES in the UK (which is most of the companies) have to give at least two year guarantee so the shops can give the 2 year wararanty to the customer. Here are a few companies: http://www.aes.org/sustaining_members/

My iMac 20inch was £945, comes to 24%. I know it changes between institutions, my uni is an Apple Dev Centre, CISCO Supercenter, Microsoft Academy and a few others.

Dixons and PC World are always worth a look. I've had a few good deals simply because if it is priced wrongly to the customers advantage they have no idea.

Definitely worth sniffing around - I recently got a a leather laptop case in there for 24.99 because some bozo in their computer department (delicious irony) forgot to put a '1' on the front. :D

The Dixons in colchester has stopped selling iPods for some reason. They've got loads of MP3 players, but i can just imagine some poor sod over Xmas going to DICKsons and asking for an iPod, and ending up with a Creative Touch 'iPod' because the sales monkey fooled them into thinking they were the same thing.

The do sell cheap-ish DAB radios though.

I see people saying buy it from the Apple Store, but unless you are getting Student Discount you are better off buying it from John Lewis, they'll give you a second year warrenty free of charge!!:D

Dixons & PC World are atrocious here in Ireland as well.. Look at the price for Apple Wireless Keyboard at PC World compared to Apple's price

€30 Euro more for what exactly?

Not such a difference in the UK stores interestingly.

DSG's problem? Inconsistent and slow pricing. It's things like the mouse that was mentioned before, it's not that it's ignorance, with that it's the theory that Dixons is a high street store, and it's 'convenient' to get such items there, and will people pay £60 for it? Sure - some will. Not many, but there's always going to be some. Go to PC World out of town? £39.99 for the same thing, despite both being part of DSG. Granted PCW's now over priced compared to the Apple online store, but in this case it's them simply not updating fast enough to be competitive. Again I imagine though there are people who will pay that few pounds more rather than waiting for delivery on it (What's apple's delivery on the MM? I'm too lazy to check - just curious if there's much difference...)

Basically, you go in Dixons and Apple is overpriced, yep. Go to the out of towns and it's not nearly so bad. It's the high street syndrome to some extent I guess.

Have to say our way we had some clearance iMac's a month or two back at £199 each. G5's, now I'm not sure if they were Rev B or C's, but they were on 256mb ram if that helps? (Not sure what came before the iSight iMac's) but yeah, bargain. I held back though and waited for the new models :)

Sorry... G5 iMacs for £199??? Are you sure that's not a typo?? Otherwise when and where did this happen?!!

And which institution might that be? ( to save me going through the entire list to find out who is cheapest?)

mcmadhatter: I'm in the Uni of Bath... I access the store through Apple's higer edu page. I've also been laughing at this EXACT lonely Mighty Mouse in Dixons! Hehe... then i went and bought some fudge.

(Get in touch! Fellow mac buddy - lol)

In my local PC World (Telford), a wired Apple keyboard is £20, the wireless one is £40 and the Mighty Mouse and wireless mouse are both £40.

One good experience I had was finding an iPod shuffle dock for only £5 - normal price £19!

I get the impression that PC World just haven't got a clue about Macs. For a time, they didn't have any Macs at all at my local store. Now they've got a 17" iMac (non-Intel, with iSight), a pair of Mac minis hooked up to crappy LCDs (so they look rubbish) and an ancient looking iBook and Powerbook. They seem to have gone out of their way to make them look as unenticing as possible.

The amount of people in there buying the rubbish, overpriced PCs that PC World sell is staggering. How can there be so many clueless people out there? Sure, buy a PC if you want, but at least buy something half decent from your local PC shop or even Dell.

And don't get me started on their PC health check service, or the sign that says "Handheld's" and the other one that says "Other's" or whatever it is.

Definitely not a typo. It was company wide (or at least in our Distribution center) I'd assume they were Rev. A's or something thinking back to the spec, but basically it was the point where they'd been sat on the shelves that long that they needed clearing off. Slash prices, clear stock, get new stock in and sell. It makes a certain sense.

Shame I'd have paid that for one.

The trouble with PCWorld is that most of the time - the maximum discount they will offer is 10% (I was speaking to the manager about this), having said that, January sales is a good time to go and see what they have discounted

Thanks to a heads up from somebody on here, I picked up a 20" Cinema Display for something like £350 last year from Dixons online. They were selling them cheap anyway and I had a discount code for a bit more off.

Still not as amazing as an iMac for 199 though.

Yeah I almost wish I'd got one, but having seen the sexy new iSight G5 at the time? I just knew I'd have been dissapointed. Still...at £180 (I work for the company) it would've been a steal. Trouble was I'd have ended up boosting the ram (256 is way too low for me) and probably adding a mighty mouse, if not wireless besides.

Have to 'fess though. PCW's extended cover on Apple stuff is amusing. They just end up calling out Apple's own techs. Sure it's great on a PeeCee but on Apple just buy Applecare if you need something :p

I went to pcw in early december, and asked if they had any intel based macs, and the guy their said i could take one away there and then?! evidentally their mac training isn't great.

But why would you go in and ask for one in December anyway:rolleyes:

Have to confess technical training is slim, mostly concentrates on sales.

Dixons is a right dive, i never ever buy anything from there unless i really REALLY have to. they are all dim, spotty, uselless shop assistants who think that mini disc players are still the future!

LOL, funny you should say that... just the other day I heard one of them flogging a minidisk player!

aah good old mini disc's, they were good until the ipods came along!

I was in PC World a month or so ago to buy a family member an Mac Mini. They were selling a "Complete Package" deal which included the Mini, Wireless Keyboard & Mouse & an LCD Monitor. Everything you need to get going....

What they failed to realise was that the Mac Mini that they were selling in the package didn't include the Bluetooth adapter, so the wireless KB & Mouse were useless.. !! I wonder how many people bought the package and spent half the day working out why they couldn't type anything in...
