I switched my iPhone 5 for a iPhone 5s and i must say i don't have the feeling that the performance is better. Sure the 5s is fast, but so is the 5. If you have the money, go for the 5s, it's always nice to buy the one with best specs :)

Thanks to everyone for their help.

I think I will go with the 5s if I can manage on 16g, else it will be the 5c (current IP4 32g is almost full).

Gone are the days of premium products lasting 5 to 6 years (like my macs have done).

Such days never existed in smartphone market.
iPhones are the phones with the longest lifetime, but after 3 years they are aging no matter what.

If you're keeping it 3 years, then for sure get the 5s. It's much more future proof with the 64 bit chip. It's also the faster phone. I've had both and you'll notice a big difference with intensive apps not just gaming.

The 64-bit thing will be something that Apple pushes. Future ios updates will have exclusive features for 64-bit.

Well I'll be going from the ip4 to the 5c so can imagine it will be a massive leap!

If you are not gaming (and even if you do game, I think it depends on the types of games you use), then I think the 5C is a great phone and will last 3 years. I got three for my parents and in-laws. I just upgraded from a 4S to a 5S, and, yes, the 5S is a very nice phone, but I cannot really say that I notice much difference (yes, even running iOS 7) other than the camera, which is nicer and enough of an improvement that it was a factor because this is my main camera now.

When I went from the 4 to the 4S, I thought it was a major upgrade. Going from the 4S to the 5S, I was surprised at how similar they performed, day-to-day, for the non-gaming tasks I use my phone for (again, other than the camera). I guess if I were playing IB III all day, I'd notice a difference.

One major factor, however, could be battery life. The battery life on my 5S is miles better than what I was getting on a 4S (either iOS 6 or iOS 7), and I suspect it's better than the 5c, even with the slightly bigger batter compared to the 5, given everything I've read about battery life for the 5. If that's a big factor for you, I'd get the 5S.

Depending on which 5c you get, it could be free compared to $199 for the 5s. That's significant, and you could save that $199 for an upgrade later.

Two years from now, maybe.
This year or next , not at all.
64-bit is something good that Apple start first. But it will be something "necessary" only in 3-4 years from now at best.

A noticeable one for sure.

The performance difference in 3 years will be the difference between the iPhone 4 and 4s today which is a pretty big difference. I say go for the 5s if you want to keep it for 3 years.

you will likely miss that extra 16gb more than you will notice anything more the 5s will do for you :apple:

I think that like you said, in 3-4 years, Apple will use planned obseletesence .

Welli look at it like this... The iPhone 4S and ipad 2 are both almost 3 years old. I know from experience that they both run iOS 7 pretty well. Therefore I believe that the 5c will run iOS 9 very well and be cut back on iOS 10. That's 3 years from now. Your phone will be fine for 3 years whether it be the 5c or 5s.

I disagree I find my iPad 2 runs ios very sluggish and occasionally crashes. And that is why I am getting an iPad air latter this month. And as to the original question get the 5s. 2-3 years down the road you will thank yourself. iOS 7 is very resource heavy being 64 bit (and the fact that the 5c can't run it in 64 bit mode doesn't help it) so I can only imagine that 8 will be too and getting the 5c will only make your phone specs that much older and just because ios 7 runs ok on the 5c now doesn't mean that 8 will run as good (or any better). But then again who knows. So like I said get the 5s you will be much happier 2-3 three years down the road.

We agree to disagree. iOS 7 runs fine on my ipad 2. No issues. Also iOS 8 will be just fine on a 5 and a 5c. Look at Apples releases. It's ios 9 that it may be watered down, but not iOS 8 for sure.

The. 64-bit won't mean anything for at least a year and probably longer. Don't go all out on a "tock" upgrade. That's all the 5s is.

We can't say anything about iOS 8 .... is just too early.

BTW iOS 7 includes 32 and 64 bit version of o.s. frameworks, so is not like iPhone 5/5c are somewhat limited.

We don't really know anything about iOS 8, but it's a safe bet to say the 4s and ipad 2 will run it. The best I can recall as long as Apple is still selling the product then the latest OS will run on it.

I'm not so sure about iPad 2 and iPhone 4s just for the memory limitation (512 MB).
It could be, but I'm not going to take that for granted.

Picked up my IP5c this morning, oh my word what a difference! So so glad I didn't opt for 16 gb version!

I had 8gb ip4 previously so music was not even an option, I now have 3 times that available to me lol. I'm looking forward to putting music on my new baby and still have space to play with!

Very happy camper here!

For most use cases, iPhones last 3 years at least (unless something like Siri launches that simply isn't available on the old phones). I bet the iPhone 4S will run iOS8 pretty well.

I had the 4 until shortly, too, and now upgraded - to a used but still perfect three months old iPhone 5. I feel like the device will be all I need for the next century - but it'll probably break before that (or I will). So, the device is more than powerful enough if you ask me. And I also made a pretty good deal and paid 380 euros for it while still getting around 200 for my old iPhone 4. So I upgraded for less than 200 euros to a very powerful, next to new phone.

If you opt for the 5c, remember that it weighs almost as much as your old 4. The 5 and 5s weigh 112 grams and the difference is very noticeable.

The only thing I envy 5s owners for is the better camera. But then I hardly ever need my phone as a camera anyway :)

Apple could very well stop selling either or both of those by the time iOS 8 is out.

They could, but it goes against there release schedule right? If the ipad 2 and iPhone 4S is still around when iOS 8 is released they will get ios 8. But take it further If you want that's all I'm saying ...

One person said the 5c won't run iOS 8 well which is pretty absurd honestly

Idk... If Apple is selling it they will support it. If iOS gets released late and iPhones get released late maybe, but if they are selling it they will support they always have... Why wouldn't they now?
