I just stubled upon that video showing that 5G lost in every comparison VS 4G LTE, except when mmwave was used (it had massive download speed but lower upload speed than 4G).

Here's the video and the results chart coutesy of appletrack:

It seems that, as some carriers reported, 5G is at it's first wave and is not an improvement as of now. But is 5G even ready? Some carriers are talking about 2022-2023 for the full roll out. Also this could be improved with next year qualcomm's x60. I also have heard that upload was using 4G at some places even where 5G was available for download.

In a crowded block, 5G will male a difference.

Over the next 12 months coverage will only improve.

Better yet, iPhone 12 has better 4G speeds (vs battery) due to Qualcomm modem.

So all in all it’s not a bad move. Over hyped? Clearly. But that’s what marketing does.

If one plans to keep their phone for 2-3 years and currently have a 2-3 yr old iPhone it’s a great upgrade. If one has an iPhone 11 Pro, I would skip this model and wait for next year.

Other review comparisons went the other way, 5G getting more consistent, slightly higher speeds than LTE. I think it all depends on where you are and who your carrier is, since they all use different frequencies and there are different concentrations of people using up the bandwidth. And other differences, such as T-Mobile having “2.4 GHz” 5G in some cities, which gets much better results than the basic 5G without the limitations of millimeter wave.

Nationwide 5G vs UW 5G.

That video means nothing to those in different areas and states. As with current LTE, it is all about location and carrier.

Ran a few preliminary tests on my new 12 Pro and LTE outperformed 5G in every aspect. Before 5G matures, the one main benefit is that Apple will allow you to download OTA updates using 5G instead of making you get on WiFi.

at home, I can get about 70 down during the day and 150+ down at night on LTE (hit 200 once). they definitely doubled the throughput around here recently as I used to only be able to top out around 80 at night. just got the 12 and ill run some tests on both once im up and running.

I really feel like the US still doesn’t have a solid 4G network.
Where I live I don’t have access to 5G but 4G speeds are 120mbps+ literally everywhere. I feel like 5G got hyped up so much by US carriers but actually it’s still crap.

T-Mobile low band 5G in southwest Florida (far from any large cities) is 4-5x faster for me than LTE. Just did a test from my recliner...iPhone 12 on 5G got 103 down, SE on LTE got 9 down.
